Officer who killed girl gets September trial date

DETROIT (AP) — A judge has scheduled a Sept. 15 trial date in the case of a Detroit police officer charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 7-year-old girl.

Prosecutors pursued the second trial for Officer Joseph Weekley, whose first trial last year ended without a unanimous verdict. The trial date was set Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Weekley admits shooting Aiyana Stanley-Jones during a raid at a house in 2010, but he says the shooting occurred when the girl's grandmother grabbed his gun. Mertilla Jones denies any interference.

Police threw a stun grenade through a window, and Weekley was the first officer through the door. Police were hunting for a murder suspect.
