Official: 3 bodies retrieved from inside ferry

MOKPO, South Korea (AP) — A coast guard official says divers retrieved three bodies from inside a ferry that sunk off South Korea, raising the confirmed death toll to 36 with more than 265 people still missing, most of them high school students on a holiday trip.

The official, Kim Kwang-hyun said early Sunday that divers broke a window of the submerged ferry to recover the bodies — apparently the first pulled out of the ferry Sewol since it sank Wednesday.

Kim says he has no information about whether the divers actually entered the ferry or whether they are now able to search the rest of the ship for bodies and possible survivors.

Strong currents have prevented divers from getting inside since the ferry with 476 people aboard sank. Only 174 people were rescued.
