    Official: navigator in Russian plane crash drunk

    MOSCOW (AP) — A spokesman for Russia's top investigative body says the navigator of a passenger airline that crashed in June killing 47 people was drunk.

    The Tu-134 slammed into a highway just minutes before it was to land at the Petrozavodsk airport in Russia's northwest on June 20. Five people survived.

    Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's Investigative Committee, said Sunday on Russian state television that "the navigator of the airliner was in a condition of alcoholic intoxication." He did not say whether the man was at the controls at the time of the crash.

    The broadcast did not specify the level of intoxication, but said experts believe the navigator, who was killed in the crash, had consumed about a glass of vodka shortly before the RusAir flight that originated in Moscow.

      ....shouldn't that read;"...about a gallon of Vodkia". When I lived in England several years ago, my wife worked at an Officers Club on an air base. She told me that it was not at all uncommon to see Russian pilots from the big Air Show sitting at a table togather and downing shots of Vodika before taking to the skys for their performance.

      Don't believe a thing the russians say. I bet there was a mechanical failure due to lack of maint. They'll hide this so thier aging airliners are not put into the spotlight and they can place blame on one person instead of the entire system.

      The navigator navigates, he doesn't fly. I don't condone anyone having to do with getting a plane full of passengers from point A to point B being under the influence, but it seems to me that the results of a drunk navigator would be the plane getting lost, not crashing. What was the pilot's condition?

      Have you ever flown on a Russian TU-134. Hell, I'd have to be drunk too before you could get me on a Russian TU-134,the way they service them.(what service ) Ducksky tape on the elevators,chicken wire over the windows, a rope for a seat belt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GERONIMOSKY!

      In russian language translation, the word vodka means water, which is how they drink it. they probably make more mistakes when they are sober.
