Officials: Car explosion, suicide bomber kill 10 in strikes near restaurant in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD - The mayor of a northern Iraqi city says at least 10 people have been killed in a double bombing near a crowded restaurant.

Mayor Abdul Ahl Abbas said a car exploded Wednesday afternoon near a popular restaurant in downtown Tal Afar, a mid-sized city about 90 miles (150 kilometres) east of the Syrian border.

As people rushed to the scene to help, a suicide bomber in the crowd detonated his explosives belt.

Abbas said 12 people were wounded.

Police officials expected the death toll to rise.
