Officials probe fish kill along Trinidad coastline

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Officials are investigating a fish die-off along Trinidad's southwest coast.

Authorities on Sunday said state-owned oil company Petrotrin is investigating the cause of the fish kill around the town of La Brea. Samples from dead mullets and other fish that have been washing up on beaches by the hundreds since last week have been collected for testing.

Petrotrin says initial testing has identified no major contaminants. But a full study by an independent lab is expected to take another two weeks.

The island's marine affairs institute has also launched its own investigation.

Local residents where the die-off is concentrated are complaining about a sickening stench from all the rotting fish.

The La Brea coastal area was badly impacted by a string of oil spills in December.
