Officials: SUV in CA train crash drove around rail

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Fire and transit officials say video of a light rail train and sport utility vehicle colliding in Sacramento shows that the SUV driver tried to go around the crossing's guardrail.

City fire Assistant Chief Niko King says cameras from both the crossing and the front of the train captured video showing the crossing arms were functioning properly when the train hit the Nissan Pathfinder on Saturday, killing a man, woman and baby in the SUV and injuring seven others.

King says a freight train had just passed and the guardrail remained down because the light rail train was approaching.

He says the driver of the SUV then tried to go around the arms and the train hit the SUV, pushing it about 30 yards down the track.

I cannot believe the driver did that with their family in the car. It's probably better that the driver died because living with the knowledge that they got their family killed would make life not worth living. I've known of two people that took the long road to suicide with drugs and alcohol after their mistakes got people killed.

What is the significance of identifying the vehicle as an SUV? We never hear about a crash where "the electric car ran the stop sign" or "the mid sized sedan drove off the bridge". Why do we often attribute special characteristics to SUV's. IT"S THE NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL!

You'll never win a race like this. Even if it's a tie, you lose.

No matter how stupid they were, it's still tragic.

The only person for whom I feel ZERO sympathy is the driver. Idiot. Thanks to his striving to be manly and aggressive, he killed a BABY, not to metion the other passenger, and injured 7 others. Yep, that's a man for ya, huh? Think about this, all you drivers out there, who cannot bear to wait on traffic, trains, pedestrians, etc., and who tailgate and generally act like it is a direct infringment on your manhood if anyone doesn't get the hell out of your way.

See what happens when you get in a big fat hurry and break the law? If you will just wait a few minutes, you will get your chance to proceed on your way! If you are that late, just call and say you are going to be late! And how did they fit 10 people in that vehicle anyway?

I guess they were in too big of a hurry to wait for the second train to pass.

Typical people that think they can just do as they please behind the wheel i watched a guy do that in front of me and get hit by a freight train i cheaked on him he was not too badly hurt called him a a hole and left had to drive 20 miles out of the way because of the fool.

Reply to Mark about identifying it as an SUV: it's because most SUV drivers are drooling morons who need a big vehicle to replace their tiny male members. The other crummy drivers seem to pick electric cars, Mitsubishis, and Cooper Minis - THOSE are, across the board, the lousiest drivers, male or female.
