Ohio food banks to get almost 767K donated eggs

Farmers donate almost 767K eggs to Ohio hunger relief groups to celebrate National Egg Month

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio egg farmers are donating close to 767,000 eggs to food banks and other hunger relief organizations throughout the state in celebration of National Egg Month.

The Ohio Poultry Association said Wednesday that eight farmers will provide the 766,800 eggs, which will be delivered the over the next couple weeks.

The industry group said the contribution's estimated retail value is $100,000. The donation marks the sixth year that the food banks and the association have teamed up to provide food to Ohioans in need.

Lisa Hamler-Fugitt of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks said in a statement that eggs are critical items to hunger relief providers because they are a versatile, high-protein food and a staple among Ohio's needy families.
