AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man suspected of shooting his wife in the head in her hospital bed is scheduled for his first court appearance as police await autopsy results that could affect the charge against him in the possible mercy killing.
A prosecutor says 65-year-old Barbara Wise was incapacitated before John Wise stood at her bedside at an Akron hospital and shot her Saturday with a handgun. She was declared dead on Sunday.
An initial court appearance for her husband of 45 years is set for Tuesday in Akron Municipal Court.
Police say a pending autopsy could upgrade the 66-year-old Massillon man's attempted aggravated murder charge to a more serious type of murder charge.
He was in police custody at an undisclosed location on Monday. No attorney had been assigned to him.
