How Ohioans can apply for FEMA relief from March 14 tornadoes

It's been almost two months since a series of tornadoes swept through central Ohio on March 14, decimating the Indian Lake community in Logan County and killing three residents.

Federal assistance may soon be on the way.

On May 2, President Joe Biden declared a disaster area in 11 Ohio counties hit by the March tornadoes, allowing federal money to start going to those communities. Here's what that means for residents:

Who is eligible for federal relief?

Residents of Auglaize, Crawford, Darke, Delaware, Hancock, Licking, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Richland and Union counties that suffered storm damage from the March 14 storms are eligible for federal assistance, according to a FEMA news release.

Residents should file claims with their insurance companies first before contacting FEMA. If you are uninsured or your insurance doesn't fully cover your losses, contact FEMA for assistance.

Even if you've already done some repairs on your property, you can still apply, according to the release.

"FEMA inspectors are trained to recognize damage caused by a disaster even after recovery has started, and they will discuss that damage with you when they come to your home. Be prepared to show repair receipts, photos and any other disaster-related documentation as well," the release said.

How do you apply for FEMA relief?

Residents can apply for assistance by calling FEMA at 800-621-3362, downloading FEMA's mobile app, or by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov.

What do you need to apply for FEMA relief?

When you apply for federal disaster relief, you'll need to have a few things ready. Here's what they are, according to the FEMA release.

  • A current phone number where you can be contacted

  • Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying

  • Your social security number (or the social security number of a minor child in your household, if you’re applying on their behalf)

  • A general list of damage and losses

  • Banking information if you choose direct deposit

  • If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name

What federal relief does FEMA provide?

FEMA assistance may take the form of temporary housing, payments for basic repairs and other disaster-related expenses, according to the release.

FEMA recovery teams will soon be onsite in the disaster areas to provide "one-on-one" support for people affected, and federal recovery centers will soon be opening up in the areas, according to the release.
