Discussion centering on the possibility of raising the debt ceiling has dominated the air waves and television news shows for the better part of this week. Obama administration officials are touting the financial downfall of American and painting a picture of starving senior citizens who would be forced to go without their Social Security checks. Conservatives see the issue another way, with those recently elected to office standing on the Tea Party principles that earned them their sears. Partisan political motives aside, federal treasury figures assure Americans that there are enough funds available to pay our bills and issue government checks to the elderly and disabled.
What Ohioans are saying about the debt ceiling issue
"The whole debate and kicking the can down the road once again is beyond tedious. We can not continue spending ourselves deeper into debt, cap the spending and keep the ceiling where it is right now." -- John Tigner, teacher, Logan
"Republicans are just plain evil '" evil to the core. Don't they realize that millions of Americans depend on their Social Security and Welfare checks to eat? We have no choice but to raise the debt ceiling and then raise taxes to keep our promises to those who can not do enough for themselves." -- Tiffany Willis, Athens, college student
"Our federal government needs to learn to live within its means just like the State of Ohio is now doing. Raising the debt ceiling or creating a temporary fix, is no solution at all. I voted for people who are willing to show up to work and make the hard choices." -- Connie Reece, insurance agent, Chilicothe
"Ohio Senators and congressional representatives '" do your job! The 2010 fall election reminded our leaders that they are public servants and work for us. The debt ceiling is no ceiling at all if it can be raised every time we spend too much money. Do not raise the ceiling, stop the reckless spending." -- Cameron Walton, small business owner, Gallipolis
"I don't like the idea of raising the debt ceiling, but I don't know what other choice we have at the moment. If President Obama is telling the truth, America will default on all of our loans, government aid checks won't be sent and our financial institutions would collapse. I trust him less now then when I voted for him, so I guess this is a test he must pass in order to keep moderate Democrats in his corner." -- Nancy Stiles, public employee, Belpre
"Although this is a serious decision, it is not a difficult one to make. Every time the debt ceiling is reached, it has been raised and sinks us deeper into debt and spending is not cut to the level it needs to get us back on track financially. President Obama never lets a crisis go to waste -- not even manufactured one like he is claiming this time by scaring seniors." -- Tim Howson, contractor, Lancaster
