Oil above $87 amid improving US consumer demand

SINGAPORE (AP) — Oil prices hovered above $87 a barrel Tuesday in Asia amid signs of improving consumer demand in the U.S.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 19 cents to $87.08 at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose $1.90 to settle at $87.27 on Monday.

In London, Brent crude for October delivery was down 35 cents at $111.53 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Crude has jumped 16 percent from near $76 three weeks ago amid growing investor optimism the U.S. economy may not slip into recession in the second half.

On Monday, the Commerce Department said consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the nation's economic activity, increased in July by the biggest amount in five months.

A rally in global stock markets also helped boost crude prices. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.3 percent Monday and most Asia stock markets gained Tuesday.

Some analysts expect crude to head lower as slowing global economic growth pinches oil demand.

"We still look for weak global demand to win out over the longer term eventually forcing the oil market into fresh low territory," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

In other Nymex trading for October contracts, heating oil rose 0.4 cent to $3.02 per gallon and gasoline futures gained 0.4 cent to $2.77 per gallon. Natural gas slid 1.9 cents to $3.81 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The CFTC (i.e. Dept of Treasury) was required by law to impose position limits by January 2011 -- and still REFUSES TO ACT. So the rape of the Americans by oil companies and Wall Street speculators just rolls on and on -- with an cost exceeding $1 BILLION in excess profits drained daily from a faltering US economy and stuffed into the pockets of the rich.

No surprise the CFTC chairman is a former partner of Goldman Sachs. How can such rampant corruption and greed run unchecked in our government? WHERE is the FBI? WHERE is the US Department of Justice? And WHERE is our President?

America DEMANDS that criminal and anti-trust laws be enforced -- and justice served. And that the Department of Treasury be investigated for public corruption and obstruction of justice.

The average price of oil will be more expensive every year for the rest of our lives. This is a direct consequence of Peak Oil. We have run out of cheap oil and the costs of extraction increase every day. In a few years crude production will start falling and it will take the economy along for the duration of the ride.

The only consumer demands I now about the price of oils and fuels, is that we're demanding the #$%$ prices at the pumps drop down to a point that we can afford to but the stuff. Oh but wait, if the prices drop that would mean prices on food would drop also, and we all know that would be bad for the companies making record profits, and we know that won't happen till hell freezes over.

"growing investor optimism the U.S. economy may not slip into recession in the second half" Oh, don't you mean, they want to make sure we slip back into recession.

Point 1: do the "consumer spending" reports include how much prices have RISEN due to higher oil prices? The fact that my grocery bill has more than doubled since last year and I buy the same stuff over and over again. Does it take into account the fact that my paycheck hasn't increased in more than 3 years? Does it take into account the payroll tax is now going right into my gas tank instead of the economy like it was intended to do?

Point 2: Does the report take into account that kids start back school in August, therefore parents need to buy supplies and clothes? Does it take into account that kids tend to grow over the summer holiday, thus meaning that their old clothes no longer fit them and they need new clothes to start the year with? Does the report take into account that every state is going through budget cuts and things that schools would normally provide are now being shoved off to parents?

Point 3: And how does the report know that the money being spent in July is actually coming from their checking accounts, rather than a credit card. If it is going onto a credit card, more than likely the parents can't afford it but know that they have to buy new supplies/clothes, so they put it on their credit cards to worry about later. Thus driving the parents to spend more on paying down debt rather than spending money on the economy which would help stimulate the economy which would in turn produce jobs, which in turn would put more money into the hands of people who would in turn buy things which would help stimulate the economy! You see how the cycle goes?

Come on now! This report has seasonal adjustment written all over it. The RAPISTS on Wall Street are just trying to pull at any little greasy, oily, string to continue to RAPE the economy in the A**. The fact is, this economy is NOT GETTING BETTER. It has DOUBLE DIP RECESSION written all over it.

Let it happen. Let this economy tank. Let's show the RAPISTS that we are sick and tired of their lies, greed, and blatant disregard for the AVERAGE AMERICAN. Time to stop letting the rich get richer and the poor continue to get raped in the A**.

Hey the dollar got stronger today should make the price go down right. Only when they want it to. Labor Day weekend is coming up a rise in oil and gas is so predictable. The last chance of the summer to gouge the American consumer. Of course spending was up last month it was back to school. Prices on everything are also higher consumers are spending more because they have to not because they want to. For the poster asking where the president is well most of his advisers are Goldman Sachs or J.P. Morgan alumni so where do you think he is? Another of his top advisers the CEO of GE is investing large amounts of money into China into a firm that will compete with Boeing. GE has been outsourcing like crazy. Another of Obama's top advisers was called the queen of outsourcing. I did not like Bush I thought he was a pro oil crook but the republicans are amateurs compared these guys.
