Oil major opens new offshore field off Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — French oil firm Total SA says it has opened an offshore field with a production capacity of 180,000 barrels a day off the coast of oil-rich Nigeria.

Total said in a statement Friday that it has started production at its new deep-water Usan field about 62 miles (100 kilometers) from the West African nation's southeastern coast.

It said Usan is the company's second-largest offshore field in Nigeria, with a crude storage capacity of 2 million barrels.

Foreign firms have pumped oil for more than 50 years out of Nigeria's southern delta, a region of swamps, mangroves and creeks roughly the size of South Carolina. However, relations with the communities on land are strained, growing interest for offshore developments.

Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and a top exporter of crude to the U.S.

These companies are ruining the marine, wildlife, and the agricultural establishments in these communities, not to mention the total degradation of the environment due to flaring of natural gas. Worst still, these companies and their affiliates bribe their way to easy contracts.

There's more oil being produced every day. Can't the price go down now?

Here we go again, environmental degradation, insensitivity to the plight of the local community, all in collusion with the rouge elements in the ruling class. They have the barrel and the people are left holding the leaky can. HISSES!

I must say that these company bring wealth to the nation, however the environmental degredation that their activities contributes to the communities is quite high, this is not because that they dont have the technology to deal with it, but because the authorities that is suppose to be regulating and making sure that these does not happen are easily bribed.

The rouges will steal everything and leave the poor ignorant masses that make up to 99,9% to remain beggars forever.

We are drilling in North Dakota, why do we need off-shore drilling? Risk YOUR water suppy with the pipeline, leave ours alone!

They are adding 180,000 barrels of crude oil a day to the oil market and that wont even effect the prices of oil being traded. But why is it that if that same 180,000 barrels of crude was taken off the oil market the prices would go up?

The U.S. reached peak oil production 40 years ago and it has been going steadily downhill ever since. But let's just suppose there are billions of barrels of easy pickings in Alaska or offshore just waiting to be extracted. By the time all the drilling equipment, transportation and infrastructure is in place which is at least 10 years down the line and before the first drop of crude comes up the intake pipe, another 900 million people will exist on the planet. That's in addition to the 2.4 billion Chinese and Indians who already are placing a strain on world oil production today. Trying to make a dent in world oil prices by adding to our own production will be like pouring a gallon of water into a swimming pool that is rapidly being drained. It won't make much difference to consumers. It will of course benefit the oil companies but that is another story. The only way to break out of this vicious cycle is for the U.S. to rapidly develop alternative liquid fuels, preferably renewable because they are not traded on the international commodity exchanges like crude is. Either algae, ammonia, cane sugar like Brazil or some other grasses would inoculate us from oil price fluctuations and provide consumers with a substitute, something we do not have now. Bio-diesel is a start but most people drive gasoline powered engines. If we do nothing or just drill for more oil, the economy will eventually stall again and possibly slip back into recession.

Wow.. This field will produce up to 180,000 barrels per day for several decades... Then what? the world uses 90,000,000 per day, so this field at its maximum will meet almost 3 minutes of the worlds demand per day.. too bad the united states has already used up up more of its own oil than any other nation on earth... Most of it sold for less than $3 per barrel, because we in america let the big oil companies steal our oil and sell it back to us for a tiny fraction of what it is really worth.. for the last 60 years, as our own supplies have dwindled away to a tiny fraction of what they once were, we havbe bought our oil from dictators made powerful with trillions of american dollars. And now, the right wingers among us want use to go all out to pump what little oil remains in america, so our kids and grandkids will become totally dependent upon the very dictators we made so rich and powerful. hasn't our energy and economic policies been grand and wise, and aren't republicans almost as smart #$%$ year olds??? wait, that's an insult to 5 year olds... Sorry, kids!!!

Or thank BP and Haliburton for cutting corners and ruining it for everybody else.
Also, thank 3-mile island and Chernobyl for no more nuclear plants.

Because of Obama and his moratoriums, drilling is moving to 3rd world nations were there are no environmental safe guards. Cap and trade will do the same thing. Vote Obama out before its too late.

US oil production is at an 8-yr high.
      • chimezie 2 mths ago
@ randy, drilling has been moving to 3rd world long before Obama came to office not to mention that jobs has been moving to china long before Obama got into politics, so leave the young man alone, he has a lot in pocket already
