Okla. school official tweets: Educators 'dirtbags'

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma's schools superintendent said Thursday that her chief of staff calling school administrators "dirtbags" in a personal Twitter post was a "poor choice of words" — but called a lawsuit targeting parents of special-needs children that prompted the comment vindictive and "groundless."

In her Sept. 7 posting, which was first reported by the Tulsa World, Jennifer Carter referred to a lawsuit the Jenks and Union school districts brought against the parents of special-needs students who had sued the districts.

The parents claim the districts refused to grant them scholarships they believe they're entitled to under state law. The scholarships allow parents to send their special-needs children to private schools.

The districts' lawsuit seeks to have the law declared unconstitutional because school officials say it gives public money to private institutions. They also say the scholarship program unequally benefits parents living in wealthier areas by shaving off some of the financial burden if they decide to move their child to another school.

"These public taxpayer dollars are going to private and religious schools," said Bonnie Rogers, spokeswoman for Jenks Public Schools. Rogers noted that of the 33 private schools signed up to participate in the scholarship program, at least 31 have some sort of religious affiliation.

Oklahoma schools Superintendent Janet Barresi called Carter's text "a poor choice of words" in a statement issued Thursday, but again blamed school superintendents for suing parents "who want nothing more than what's best for their children."

"I think Oklahomans are concerned and shocked that any school district would vindictively target the parents of special needs children with a groundless lawsuit," she said.

Carter, who has been on maternity leave, released a statement Thursday admitting that she "could have used a different word" in her tweet, but continued to criticize the superintendents of harassing and bullying parents at taxpayer expense.

Perhaps this individual should have the same standards applied that a teacher would, if they made a disparaging remark about their schools, students, or admin on a social media site - instant suspension and an investigation into their educational dispositions. Kind of like the teacher in Florida who criticized gay marriage on his Facebook and got tossed under the bus for it? What's good for the goose..

He also added that "f;ing retards" "worthless m-fkers" and "brainless P/O/S" would have been better choices.......

Jennifer Carter is paid by the govt. Is on materinty leave, earning six figures, and calling the workers in the trenches dirt bags, PUBLICLY.

She should be terminated. And I bet she will be.

Regardless of what the school districts are doing, this lady blew it, and it impeaches her claim to high pay.

      Bilge blow her, NOW.

the law doesn't grant students or special ed students the right to the best education. spec ed has a right to adequate, NOT ideal/best/wonderful. there's no point wasting 100k/yr on "students" who will never hold a job.

Actually special education students are required to be in the least restrictive environment. Sometimes local school districts can't or won't ensure the health and safety of their special education students (forget about actually teaching them for a moment) and parents have to do what is in their child's best interest, especially since no childcare setting will take most special needs children but no one wants to pay for the welfare for the parents to stay home to take care of the child. So, that leaves other choices a necessary evil. Check out IDEA...a federal mandate just so people with think these children don't deserve opportunities to reach their full potential so maybe they can hold jobs.

No one should be allowed to use public dollars for private school….UNLESS it is made available for ALL students in a less than desirable setting.

Jennifer Carter is right to call them dirtbags, those trench-workers are suing parents that are just trying to do the right thing for their children. Read the article closer, this is a bunch of union thugs trying to make sure the government dough goes in their pocket so they can waste it like they've been doing for the last 50 years.

Down with the public school system, up with unregulated public school vouchers!
