Olly Murs on X Factor blunder: I would've chinned Dermot O'Leary if he'd done that to me

Olly Murs has joked he would’ve “chinned” former X Factor host Dermot O'Leary if he’d made the same mistake as him on last week’s show.

The talent show co-presenter made a gaffe live on Sunday night’s results show when he accidentally said wannabe Monica Michael had been sent home, instead of saying the vote had gone to Deadlock.

While contestant Monica seemed unfazed by Olly’s error, the TV presenter - who finished runner-up in the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009 - wouldn’t have taken it so lightly if then-host Dermot O'Leary had made a similar blunder.

Speaking on tonight’s Alan Carr: Chatty Man show - which airs tonight on Channel 4 at 10pm - he said: “I was mortified. More mortified because of me being a contestant and I know how tense that moment is.

“That is what really hurt me the most. If that was me on stage I probably would have chinned Dermot.“

Olly - who co-hosts the programme with Caroline Flack - was concerned show boss Simon Cowell was going to sack him after the incident, so he rushed into the music mogul’s dressing room when the show ended.

He explained: “I walked in like, ‘Simon, I am so sorry,’ and he was just like, 'Oh, it’s fine, don’t worry about it.’ He was really cool about it. Phew!”

But there was still some physical harm done - to Olly’s phone.

The singer got so wound up by reading all the hatred he was getting on Twitter for making the mistake that he launched the device and cracked it.

He added: “I really couldn’t believe the kind of hate I was getting. It was quite bad. I went on Twitter for two seconds and I threw my phone. I actually have got a massive crack on my phone where I just threw it.”
