Olympic gold medallist Ashleigh McIvor retires from competitive ski racing

VANCOUVER - After attempting a comeback this year following knee surgery, Olympic gold medallist Ashleigh McIvor has announced her retirement from competitive ski racing.

McIvor, 29, stood on 11 World Cup podiums and retires as the reigning Olympic champion after her victory at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

She tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee during a training run at the X Games in January 2011.

After surgery, she started training again this summer.

She says she felt capable of racing again but admitted the injury was a factor in her decision to quit.

She also recently announced her engagement to Vancouver Whitecaps soccer star Jay DeMerit.
