One Direction’s Liam Payne: ‘It’s OK to Be Sad’ About Zayn Malik’s Exit

Feel free to crack open the Kleenex box, One Direction fans; you have Liam Payne’s permission to cry.

The band member spoke out about Wednesday’s departure of his cohort Zayn Malik on Thursday, saying, “I feel like right now it’s OK to be sad and upset.”

Payne also noted, “This last week has been some of the worst times, possibly the worst it’s something we are all deeply saddened by.”

Nonetheless, Payne tweeted Thursday that fans should “keep [your] faith in us” and vowed, “I’m super sure us and Zayn will always remain the closest friend.”

He added, “I guess what I’m really trying to say is it’s far from over.”

Malik departed the boy band on Wednesday, explaining, “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”

He also apologized “to the fans if I’ve let anyone down,” but asserted, “I have to do what feels right in my heart.”

Shortly before departing the band, Malik bowed out of the group’s tour, citing stress.

The group, which came together after auditioning as solo artists on the UK version of the talent competition “The X Factor,” will continue on with remaining four members Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.
