One guilty, one acquitted in murder of 13-year-old Mississauga girl

TORONTO - A jury in Brampton, Ont., has convicted Rafal LaSota of killing a 13-year-old girl, who was stabbed repeatedly and found stuffed in a garbage bag.

However, jurors acquitted LaSota's then-girlfriend, Michelle Liard, of first-degree murder in the 2008 death of Aleksandra Firgin-Hewie.

Firgin-Hewie was stabbed 37 times with a knife and had 27 blunt-force injuries in LaSota's bedroom.

He later told his mother he had killed a girl, but said it was an accident.

The judge had told the jury there was "no mystery'' about who killed Aleksandra, but said they needed to consider if it was planned and deliberate, as well as what involvement Liard had.

LaSota faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years.
