One mother's catharsis on Srebrenica massacre anniversary

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — Three bones make Kada Hotic feel like a winner. It may not sound like much after nearly two decades of anguish, but to her they mean everything.

Two pelvic bones and a fragment of the lower jaw are what remain of Hotic's son Samir, who was killed by Serb forces in the killing fields of Srebrenica. They were dug up this year and identified — and now he will have a proper funeral along with 612 other newly identified massacre victims.

"They said I should not be looking for more," she said of the remains. "In a way I am happy, if this can be called happiness. But the alternative is not finding anything and that would have been worse."

There's something else that makes Hotic happy.

She came face to face last month with the man she blames for Samir's death: former Serb general Ratko Mladic, who was captured in May and is standing trial in The Hague, Netherlands on charges of masterminding Europe's worst massacre since World War II.

Last month, her eyes met Mladic's through the glass barrier that divided the courtroom from the audience chamber. She pointed at him, then at herself, slowly dragged a finger across her throat — and waved it Mladic.

"You killed my only son," she said the gestures meant. "Now you will pay for it."

Srebrenica — with its majority Muslim population — was a U.N.-protected area, besieged by Serb forces throughout the 1992-95 war for Serb domination in Bosnia.

But U.N. troops there offered no resistance when the Serbs overran the town on July 11, 1995. There, Serbs proceeded to round up Srebrenica's Muslims and killed more than 8,000 men and boys — the climax to the 1992-95 Bosnian war that claimed 100,000 lives. An international court later labeled the killings a genocide.

Hotic lost 29-year-old Samir, her husband Sead, two brothers, and many men in her wider family.

The killers plowed the bodies into hastily dug mass graves, which they later reopened to move the bodies to other sites in an attempt to hide the crime. They worked with bulldozers that ripped bodies apart.

Forensic experts have been painstakingly assembling complete skeletons and checking each bone against the DNA from survivors' blood samples.

Most of the time, however, families don't get anything near a full set of bones. They just bury body parts so they have a grave to visit at the Potocari memorial center near Srebrenica, built across the former U.N. base where Bosnian Muslims had sought shelter.

Hotic sat there paralyzed with fear 16 years ago, listening to the general issuing orders as U.N. peacekeepers stood idly by.

"He told them 'my Serb brothers, you have green light, use this opportunity, one like this will not be offered to you again," she remembers. Then she watched soldiers separating men from women — and taking the men away, it turned out, for execution.

The memorial was built in 2003 at the site where she last saw her son and husband. That year, Hotic buried her husband, whose remains had already been found.

Through the years, Hotic has found special ways to keeping her son alive. Samir was a smoker and blew rings "you could push a stick through."

After Srebrenica, she took up smoking and practicing smoke rings.

"If I would manage to make one, I imagined it was his."

Since 2003, she has been going to Potocari every year for the mass funerals, in which almost 4,000 victims have been laid to rest. As of Monday, one of the gravestones will read Samir Hotic.

And with closure near, she has quit smoking.

"The waiting was not in vain," she said. "I may be a victim, I lost my loved ones but I am the winner."

What is so vindictive about the woman, you SOB Serb? You said it all: Serbs like you just want dominance, period, and wouldn't hesitate to kill off all those who would not submit to your dominance if you have the chance to! You are no better than the Nazis!

I just met a Bosnian family who fled during the war and settled in PA.
Very nice people but what struck me is they came here with nothing, now own a business, live in a 500K home and their kids are college graduates or still going to college.
This while many Americans are running around with access cards .and living in Section 8 housing.
      Something wrong with that picture.

Yeah, it says something about immigrants in this country. They tend to be hard-working, industrious and committed to improving their lives. I hope that's the lesson you're taking from your observation.

I may be a bit out of touch lately but I don't remember hearing until this article that UN forces did nothing while this was going on. If this is so then every single soldier there who turned their back on this carnage should also have to pay for the crime. I hope they have trouble looking themselves in the mirror and should fervently pray that their country never has to go through anything even remotely like this. If it did how would they feel if their sons were murdered along with fathers in his family? God help me I wish nothing but ill for those who stood by and allowed this.

The UN mandate didn't allow them to fight. Most of the UN units there unarmed or under equipped. They were sent as a gesture and the UN made clear, they would not accept that the soldiers, they sent in their would do anything to defend the refugees.

You both are really out of it.

The muslim army, led by their cowardly commander Naser Oric, used Srebrenica as a base to continually attack and murder the unarmed Serbian peasants in the surrounding villages. If anyone should be called bloodthirsty, it's Naser Oric. And Srebrenica was not unarmed - they had over 5,500 armed muslim soldiers there. So it is understandable from a military sense that Mladic viewed it as a legitimate military target, and like a true soldier, he let the women and children go free. Oh, and when that coward Naser Oric realized in the spring of 1995 that Mladic was going to attack him in Srebrenica to get revenge, Oric ran away ahead of the attack and left the city without military command, instead of defending his people.

During the 90's, most people in the US and Europe (The West) had never heard of Bin-laden, Al-qaeda and jihad. So most people there went along with the Clinton administration's push to support Bin-laden, Al-qaeda and jihad terrorism in the Balkans through the 90's into 2001. But then 9/11 happened (at least 2 of them received their jihad training in Bosnia murdering serbs) and then Bin-laden, Al-qaeda, and Jihad terror was imprinted on the masses conscious, but there was a problem. The Clinton administration, the EU, NATO, and Ministry of Truth had supported Bin-laden, Al-qaeda, and jihad terror in the Balkans. Down the Orwellian memory hole they tried to put it. The truth has a way of eventually overcoming lies meant to suppress it. We see that happening allot now. Looks like the house of card lies is collapsing, the dam has already broke on this issue.

YOu are so wrong like most people who get onto these sites to spew crap that isn't true and can easily be debunked. I will put you in the same group as Palin, Beck, Limbaugh and Bauchmann. If you do not know the facts perhaps you shouldn't say anything at all.

Hey Dicky, cite ONE credible source for your claims. Just ONE. I won't be holding my breath waiting for your reply.
      • Peter Brendt 10 mths ago
Talking some lbs of bull, are you? Sebrenica had nothing to do with Osama bin Laden. Do you have at least an idea where that was?
    • Dicky  •  10 mths ago
Read about the "Real Srebrenica" by Israpundit. It would fit in with what we have been seeing the last couple of years after the Clinton propaganda appartus was taken down. Ghastly charges of Clinton terrorist allies holding Christian Serbs in cattle slaughterhouses to murder butcher for their organs, recent jihad murder of 2 US airmen in Germany by a Kosovo muslim terrorist, the planned jihad murder attacks on US service personnel at Quantico, and FT Dix, the hague prosecutors admittance that it was a kangaroo court biased against the Christian serbs. And especially that at least 2 of the 9/11 terrorists were involved in murdering Serbs in Bosnia etc

One greatest flaws of character is the want to feel superior. Does holding power over someone or something make us feel like gods? Is it part of who we are or is it learned?
    • Chetnik  •  10 mths ago
So when will the Media share the stories of all of the Serbian people that suffered all of this? Ya know it was not all so one sided...Lets hear from some mothers of Serb Children that where slaughtered at the hands of the Muslims around this very area ..
    • Al Koholic  •  10 mths ago
MG!! Did this nitwit actually say that she was PRESENT when Mladic ordered "My Serb brothers, you have green light, use this opportunity, one like this will not be offered to you again,"!?!?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH

Seriously? And we're all just supposed to believe it? LMAO

This woman is a farce! An opportunist who latched onto a story and made herself the center of it while the moronic media who lost it's journalistic integrity long ago just goes along for the ride.

OSAMA BIN LADEN WAS IN BOSNIA WITH HIS JIHADISTS BATTLING THE "EVIL SERBS"!! THIS IS WHO SUPPORTED THE MUSLEMS SIDE!!!

I wasn't down in Sebrenica at that time, but I met people from there and other places in former Yugoslawia short after, including officers who had been there under UN command. The soldiers were not allowed to fight, they were anyway mostly unarmed or at least under-geared. The Serbs killed every young man in an age that would have made it possible for him to become a soldier against them. Muslims and Christians the same. For them, it was who wasn't a Serb was dead.

I wonder what the real truth is about what happened in that war.Saudia Arabia said do this, say this and Mr. Clinton did it and said it.

Amazing how they keep "digging up" all these new bodies without a single newspaper covering it since you know it'd be considered "newsworthy".

      Propaganda continues...
