Online Advertising Revenue Sets Record High in First Quarter

U.S. online advertising brought in $8.4 billion over the first three months of the year, the best first quarter the industry has recorded to date.

According to a joint report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), online advertising grew by $1.1 billion, or about 15%, in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the first quarter of 2012. That's strong growth, but less than the 24% jump in revenue between Q1 2010 and Q1 2011.

Separate studies suggest that mobile, social and video are driving the growth. Mobile advertising is already a $5 billion market worldwide, a third of which is spent in the Asia-Pacific region, according to PwC. eMarketer forecasts that social networks will generate $10 billion in revenue in the U.S. next year.

The researcher also predicts that online advertising will continue to witness annual double-digit growth in the U.S. through 2014. Still, not everyone is poised to enjoy the boom. A recent Pew report suggested that news publishers will capture few of those ad dollars unless they start offering better targeting options a la Facebook and Twitter.
