    New Online Degrees Announced By Concordia University, Nebraska

    Programs offer professional development in a convenient and flexible format

    Concordia University, Nebraska, has launched a website highlighting its two new online degree programs for graduate students, the Master of Public Health and the Master of Human Services.

    The site, onlineprograms.cune.edu, offers program overviews, course descriptions, faculty biographies, and job outlooks. The website also offers detailed information on the application and admissions process, what it’s like to take courses online, news and events, and benefits for military students.

    The online Master of Public Health builds knowledge and skills in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, research, and health policy management and offers a practitioner approach that allows students to apply what they’ve learned in real-life situations. A specialization in community health education offers a grassroots perspective of public health, while the specialization in health policy and administration takes a leadership perspective for those who wish to effect change at a policy level.

    “Public health fits the mission of our school very well,” says Dr. Jen Janousek, MPH program director at Concordia. “Public health is the epitome of serving others. You’re protecting and promoting the health of communities, churches, entire populations.”

    The online Master of Human Services is designed to meet a demand for services caused by the rapidly expanding older segment of the population and a potential decline in funding for government programs.

    “At one time the number of people needing human services was mainly children or young families,” says Dr. Renea Gernant, chair of the School of Health and Human Science at Concordia University, Nebraska. “The shift in demographics is now moving toward older adults.”

    This demographic shift will challenge service providers to think and work in new ways. Concordia’s online MHS offers coursework in aging studies, lifespan development, professional ethics, and intercultural communication to meet these emerging needs. In addition, students can delve into a more focused area of study through three specializations: gerontology, human services leadership and management, and community and public health. Students can also choose a generalist track by combining courses from the three specializations, providing broad-based expertise.
