It Only Takes $1,000 to Learn to Dance Like a Congressman

Have $1,000 to burn, a love for Midwestern Republicans, and a hankering to learn ballroom dance? Then former dance instructor and current Rep. Bill Huizenga of Michigan has the class for you.

Around 15 people are expected to attend Huizenga's ballroom-dance class tonight in Washington, with the proceeds—$1,000 per couple, or $1,500 if you're a political action committee—going to his reelection campaign. He may be onto something: Ballroom dance has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence recently with attendance at ballroom events seeing a 35 percent spike in the decade that ended in 2011, according to the nonprofit USA Dance.

Huizenga has a long history with dance, which he's been teaching since he was 14. His mother owned and operated a studio in Holland, Mich., for most of the '90s, and his wife is a fellow instructor. In college he'd teach lessons at night after working at his father's gravel pit during the day.
