COMMENTARY | When Trayvon Martin was shot to death by George Zimmerman in February, observers couldn't wait until facts came out so they could know exactly what happened.
Zimmerman hasn't been charged with any crime, although many have already charged him in spirit. In the proceeding weeks, more information arrived about the case. Some hoped that it could bring a speedy conclusion to the police investigation. What has happened, unfortunately, is that the new information has just made things more confusing.
According to the Associate Press the last week of March, Martin had been suspended from school before the shooting after officials found traces of marijuana in his book bag. The obvious question to all of you should be: What in the heck does that have to do with him being shot by Zimmerman? It just screams to me that those on the Zimmerman side of things are trying to do as much as they can to mar Martin's character. Pot found in a school bag has about as much to do with him being killed as the bag of Skittles that he had when he died.
The other thing is the issue with the 911 tapes. According to CNN this week, forensic audio experts have listened to the tape and determined that Zimmerman said the word punks in reference to Martin. This was after tremendous scrutiny over the idea that Zimmerman may have used a racial slur while on the phone with the 911 operator. So here's the big question. Is this the one thing that the authorities are waiting on to see if they have enough evidence to arrest George Zimmerman? Whether he is a racist or not? He admitted he shot Trayvon.
The whole investigation into the shooting has been bungled beyond belief. But one thing that does play into a potential prosecution is the idea that Zimmerman was engaging in some sort of vigilantism. According to ABC News, the neighborhood watch captain had made several 911 calls previously describing suspicious people in the area. Which was right, and was his job. However, why was his first choice to take care of a problem in the neighborhood a gun?
