The Orchard Buys TV-Digital Rights to Nancy Spielberg’s Israel Documentary

The Orchard has acquired digital and broadcast rights in North America for the documentary “Above and Beyond” from producer Nancy Spielberg and director Roberta Grossman.

The film is set to open in limited release Friday in New York.

“Above and Beyond” is set in 1948 and focuses on ragtag group of skilled American pilots – both Jewish and non-Jewish — who smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. The Machal (“volunteers from abroad”) played a key role in winning the war.

Spielberg is the younger sister of Steven Spielberg. Her credits include “Chernobyl Heart” and “Elusive Justice: The Search for Nazi War Criminals.”

The deal was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo of the Orchard with Marc Bortz of Preferred Content on behalf of the filmmakers.
