Ore. mushroom pickers found alive after 6 days

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A family of three huddled on the edge of an old-growth Oregon forest for six days, lost and cold, unable to signal search helicopters flying low and slow overhead.

Without food, water or even warm clothing, Belinda and Daniel Conne, along with their 25-year-old son, Michael, survived by drinking water from streams and taking shelter in a hollowed-out tree.

On Saturday, they managed to crawl to a clearing, where a search helicopter spotted them several miles outside the community of Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.

"It's a miracle, really," Curry County Sheriff John Bishop said.

The three were airlifted to a Gold Beach hospital, where Bishop spoke with them at an emergency room.

The family told Bishop they could see helicopters just a few hundred feet above them while they were lost, but couldn't signal rescuers.

Bishop said Daniel Conne suffered a back injury, Belinda Conne had hypothermia, and their son had a sprained foot and minor frostbite. All three also were dehydrated and hungry.

"They just got turned around," Bishop said. "They sought some shelter in a hollowed-out tree and basically they stayed in the same place. But it was heavy vegetation where they were."

Bishop said the three were "remarkably in pretty good shape," given the amount of time they spent outside. He said they likely could have survived for two or three more days in the area, where fresh water is plentiful but food is scarce.

The area's weather was mostly clear, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter flew the family to Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach. A nursing supervisor said Saturday afternoon the family members were in a doctor's care and were unavailable for comment.

At the hospital emergency room, Bishop said the Connes were "very thankful for the rescue" and were able to eat solid food.

The ordeal began last Sunday when the three went out looking for hedgehog mushrooms, an orange-topped fungus prized by mushroom hunters for its sweet and nutty flavor. The family had been living in a trailer at a campsite after leaving Oklahoma for Oregon last summer.

Dusk fell during their hunt. They started to return to their Jeep but couldn't agree on directions.

"Pretty quickly, they found they were lost," Bishop said.

The family found a forest road next to a river bank and huddled together with their dog, a pit-terrier mix.

Search parties were dispatched Tuesday, when their campsite manager realized the Connes hadn't returned. The Jeep was found on a logging road Wednesday, along with two small dogs and the family's jackets.

Searchers found a trail and a few hopeful clues along the way: a can of Pepsi, mushroom-picking buckets, a few pieces of clothing.

Bishop said Daniel Conne told him he had a sinking feeling every day the family wasn't found. Conne would watch the search helicopter pass, but had nothing with which to signal it through the thick coastal forest vegetation.

"They said, 'You were right above us,'" Bishop said.

When the family was finally found Saturday, they were only 200 yards from the nearest group of searchers.

The search had focused on a 4-square-mile area. Bishop said the family was in the search area but likely kept moving, making the search for them more difficult.

"We were actually right near them all three days" of the search, Bishop said. In the area's canyons, "you think people can hear you, but they can't."

The search involved three Southern Oregon counties and one California county.

When dawn broke Saturday, Bishop said searchers entered the woods without much hope.

"We were sort of getting ready to go into body-recovery mode," he said.

Joe Dykes, who works at the Huntley Park campsite where the family was staying, said Belinda and Daniel Conne arrived at the campsite in July after moving there from Oklahoma. Their son arrived later.

Belinda Conne works as a housekeeper at the Jot's Resort, where motel owner Virginia McKinney said the Connes were preparing to rent a home in Gold Beach before the disappearance.

McKinney said Belinda told her she always wanted to live on the Oregon coast, and finally left Oklahoma last year with the intention of settling down.

The area where the Connes were found is rugged country in the Klamath Mountains riddled with a maze of logging roads. People frequently get lost or stranded there.

In 2006, a San Francisco family was stranded in a snowstorm on a logging road about 35 miles northeast of the search area for the Connes. James Kim died of hypothermia trying to hike out, but his wife and children were rescued by a helicopter pilot.

They are human beings. I am happy for their return. This is probably a hobby of theirs, picking mushrooms. They don't deserve your negative comments. I serve my country and have continued to do so for the past 19 years. I am amazed at what I hear and read nowadays from people online. I wonder on a moral level why I do this when I see comments like this. So they look different and have different habits. They are part of your community as a country. Direct you hate elsewhere, but don't direct it at your own people!

I completely agree. I was in the Air Force for about 10 years and it's rediculous what some people say about a fellow countryman/woman simply because they live differently or look differently. The U.S. was ment to be a place where people could go to get away from being judged by how they look or what they do but lately it has gotten a lot worse...people need to keep out of others' personal business...but I suppose stupid people still have the right to say stupid things...

Amen brother... I was in the NAVY for 8 years but have served with Marines and thats one thing I miss about my Marines... We backed each other up no matter what and it got us through some of the roughest #$%$ we've gotten ourselves into. That's what need right now and quit being negative.

To all of you people attacking these folks for their looks and situation? Who are you to judge? It is clear that these people fell on hard times and were trying to make the best of a situation, and they got lost while hunting for, well, FOOD! If you want to insult their dental hygiene, why don't you just cough up the bucks and pay for their dental work? I know how much that costs and I can't afford it, so how can they? Oh, gee, maybe they can't afford a GPS that will work in the woods, not all of them do, you know!

They weren't hunting for food. Out here Where I live on the Southern Oregon Coast every winter mushroom hunters pick wild mushrooms and Sell Them. They can get $40. per pound for some of the most rare varieties. Consider them the modern gold rush. The motels are full of mushroom buyers and pickers who trade the days pickings each evening in from of their respective motel rooms. The mushrooms go to fancey restaurants and elite grocery stores that cater to these rare delicacies. Think tuffles, France? Sweet delicate wild mushrooms from the deep forests of Oregon. YOU TOO CAN GET LOST IN OREGON.

Elizabeth C - thank you - well said. It is so easy for people to laugh and say mean things about others in a bad situation. Just remember folks, what goes around comes around. One day you may find yourself in a bad position and I hope others cheer your rescue, not make fun of your teeth. SMH.

Next time bring a roll of toilet paper, cut pieces and tie every 20ft. ahead (straight line). If you forgot where you came from, I'm very sure you can follow your way back using the toilet paper as a guide. In the olden days, they marked the tree using machete similar to what I have mentioned here going deep into the jungle. Lot of ways not to get lost. This is just one simple technique you can used. Buy compass, it's even better...

Learn from these people's mistakes. Always have a signal mirror, some waterproof matches, and one or two of those emergency foil blankets in a fanny pack. A small first aid kit and a water purifying straw wouldn't hurt either. a light daypack could hold some food and your jacket. A topo map and compass are also good ideas, as is a whistle !

Hey people don't go hiking or foraging in the woods without some basic equipment and some basic skills:
      1) A good knife with the knowledge to use it.
      2) Matches you morons. Or the basic elements to start a fire. I don't smoke but I alway have a Bic lighter. They can get wet but easily dried and will work well.
      3) A cheap plastic tarp or poncho. It is ground cover, shelter and water a collection device all rolled into one.
      4) A compass or at least the ability to figure out north, south, east and west. That big orange thing first thing in the morning is in the east at night it is in the west.
      5) Something that holds water. I love my war surplus circa 1955 steel military canteen. Protect the cap and you can boil water right on a fire. It also comes with a metal cup that you can use for a variety of purposes. You can boil water in the cup too.

Anything else is up to you to choose. But the five items listed above and my American Express Card, I never leave home without them.

"Without food, water or even warm clothing." What were these guys thinking? I have a special kit with fire making, signaling and other important gear I don't ever go out into the woods with out. What were these idiots doing? People treat the woods like they are a playground. Same with the ski resorts. People don't realize they are on the side of a f'n mountain. They think it's some kind of super controlled resort and totally forget where they are. ALWAYS prepare with water, food, fire, signaling etc with you when you go into the woods.

I bet 90% of the people posting on here never go out in the woods. If they did, they would know how easy it is too get "lost". Smart thing; staying in one place near a stream. Another few weeks and they would probably have figures out how to forage, trap, fish, and even hunt. My first week of survival training (with nothing but a knife) was the toughest. After that it began to get easier day by day. You begin to become primitive. Anyway, during my training, I was amazed to discover that most people get "lost"within a few miles of a road. People are right or left justified which leads them to walk in circles. Or they head for higher elevations. WRONG. Always go downhill and you will find a road or a stream that will lead you in the right direction. Downhill with a stream or river.

Gawd. Some of you people need to get laid!!! So much bile and anger at a story that had a happy ending for people who seem to have beautiful spirits and have probably never harmed a soul. Here's to hoping that if ever you're lost, you can be found.

    • A Yahoo! user  •  3 mths ago
Normal price for hedge hog mushrooms 30$ per pound. Sounds to me like they just may have been trying to make some cash. I bet about 70 to 90% of the commenters would be dead in a matter of days. The odds are stacked against even survivor man. You have to be smart to survive. Just because they look like stoners doesn't mean they are.
PREJUDICE is alive and well in the USA.

Sadly, people do get lost in the woods and die. I think more schools should teach kids outdoor survival skills and first aid even colleges and high schools should. Also people should learn these things on their own by reading a book such as Keller's Outdoor Survival Guide available on Amazon, learning first aid and keeping all medicine with them as well as food and maybe supplies in their vehicle for an emergency or pockets. Not to mention a cell phone or laptop pc. I'm glad their dogs were ok but they are no lassie that's for sure lol.

Have spent my whole life in the mountains. It's not even survival skills, it's common sense. Anytime lost, a stream or river will always lead you to a bridge. They had mushrooms and water, and so many things to eat in the wild. Not too many places in the continental U.S. where you can't walk for 2 days and find help. The son could have stayed with the dad while the mom walked out. I don't understand suffering for 6 days. Don't go into the wild if you aren't prepared. I wouln't go into L.A. or New York City, lol.
