Oregon Physicist -- Crop Circles Go High Tech

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

The creation of crop circles seems to have gone high tech, according to an article in Physics World journal as related in the U.K. Telegraph. Apparently crop circles are now being created with magnetrons, which use magnetism and electricity to create heat.

Crop circles, mysterious patterns that seem to occur in wheat fields overnight, have been the subject of fascination for centuries. Explanations ranging from demons to space aliens have been posited over the years. Why demons or aliens would do such a thing is a matter of conjecture.

The crop circle phenomenon has been the subject of TV and movies, most notably "Signs," a film by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Mel Gibson.

Crop circles are more often than not the work of human beings, either openly as a form of art, or clandestinely as a hoax. The standard technique is somewhat pain staking, using planks and rope to flatten crops to create intricate patterns.

But according to Professor Richard Taylor, director of the Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon, crop circles are being created using magnetrons which are commonly found in microwave ovens. Very likely GPS transponders and lasers are also being used to exactly create patterns in wheat fields

This method allows hoaxers to do their work under cover of darkness, in a single night, and to be away before being discovered. Farmers and other people coming upon the crop patterns are left to wonder how they came to be.

Though it has been demonstrated, as related in an article in Scientific America, that human beings can create crop circles using even the traditional simple plank and rope method, the will to believe in some kind of supernatural agency is still very strong. The slogan often used on the TV program "The X Files," which states "I Want to Believe" articulates the tendency succinctly.

Still the idea that groups of hoaxers, who clearly have too much time on their hands, are doing this just for their own amusement is a compelling enough story without bringing in artistically minded aliens. Perhaps someone could make a movie based on that premise as well.

Hmmm... Although I agree there are immensely talented artists that can work very fast, I doubt they can work THAT fast. I have seen incredible work, but it actually took weeks or months to complete. And, by the way, where are the films, photos or any other type of documentation showing that actual people made these designs in the fields? Furthermore, why nobody is taking responsibility of such fantastic job? Are these artists too shy to come forward? Really?
      • Mike 9 mths ago
or the fact that over all the years this has been going on it seems nobody has ever been caught in the act...

        Exactly.

I can't believe that the ones being made all over the world are man made.. Some off them are realy to complex to be made in 1 nite. I think it would take a lot more power then a micro wave oven to do it.. more government coverup..

Hey Professor, making up theories is fine, but could you give us a practical demonstration, start by finding a corn field, get there at 2:00 AM, carry a magnetron, battery, laser pointer and GPS, while creating a reasonably complex and exact design. Diifficulty: DO NOT GET CAUGHT because no crop circle maker ever gets caught while making it. If you or your team gets caught, farmer gets to do whatever he or she wants to do with you. Deal?
    • NuclearWar  •  9 mths ago
This article is a government coverup to a phenomena they don't want you to know.about. Nobody goes through a field with a microwave oven device. How about all the credible witnesses that have seen strange lights coming from above the fiields that produce crop circles. Government professional "debunkers" are at work here. The explanation is ridiculous. Crop circles have been made on inaccessible ice flows in the Soviet Union and other places. They are very sophisticated and number in the thousands. Sure there are some artists at work once in a while but I suggest reader research this further. The Governement had been covering up the existence of UFOs since 1947.
    • ValiantThor  •  9 mths ago
Again... this is the stupidest attempt to debunk and basically you are saying that some advanced technology made them because humans can't do it otherwise. Don't be a tool dude, retract your idiocy because what human is going to use such a thing to make a crop circle? It's ludicrous for you to even say it... didn't you feel stupid writing your summation?
    • Laure  •  9 mths ago
"Crop circles are more often than not the work of human beings"

What a ridiculous statement... Did he even research crop circles? Has he ever seen one so intricately made, in the process of being made? These things are designed and made from above... not ON the ground.

Just because a few idiots laid claim to a few lame patterns in England, that means ALLLL of the crop circles throughtout the WORLD since 800 AD have been man made??

      That, sir, is not feasible...

Anybody who has spent any time reseaching crop circles knows that not all of them are hoaxes. Some entity that we don't understand makes them and yes there are pranksters trying (poorly) to copy them. Because our religions tell us that they know it all and we're the highest form of life some people are unable to accept the truth.
      • Solidarity USA 9 mths ago
We're also the most intelligent form of life. Believe that and I'll sell you some ocean front property in Az.
    • Tolphas  •  9 mths ago
Ok. I'm an avid alien believer. i do believe there is explainable things out there. But I don't believe one word about crop circles anymore considering we have never even tried to shoot down these "UFO" sightings when we've had them clear to the naked eye. If we've seen UFOs right there in front of us, why do we just watch it and then after it flies off, wonder what it was, why can't our big and bad government shoot it down?
      • Nicole 9 mths ago
Yeah that's brilliant, let's shoot down an aircraft that is beyond our technology just because we want to see what it is. Do you think there would'nt be retaliation if we shot down a UFO...are you kidding?
      • YahooProfile 9 mths ago
you would bring war upon an alien race that is way more advanced than us?? thats the dumbest thing ever
      • Spencer Jones 9 mths ago
I have to concur. Wow, Tolphas, you are a dumb a**. Why and How would you shoot down a UFO? Like stated, they are lightyears ahead of our tech. Wouldn't you think that at any time they could reder useless the worlds militaries. They are here to observe and report. With the moon as a base they could rule the skies and control of the engagement in days. Think with that little mind.

Crops circles have been solved! Done deal. It’s been a hoax all along. What a joke. Like everything else. They want you to think they know the answers to everything. Bottom line is they know nothing. It’s a hypothesis. If science cannot explain something usually it is declared a hoax. This opinion got a boost when two retired men came forward in the early nineties and claimed they had made the crop circles. Remarkably, this claim appeared simultaneously on CNN and a number of top international newspapers like the Wallstreet Journal, The New York Times, and European papers like the eminent French publication "Le Figaro". It is practically impossible to appear on CNN or on any other main stream publication with a topic as far out as crop circles. That this happened in a timely coordinated fashion indicates that someone with a lot of clout was behind this action.
The first most well known positive depiction of a crop circle is found in a woodcut made in 1678 with the title 'Strange News out of Hartford-shire’. Microwaves and GPS in 1678? Makes it more plausible that some type of extremely intelligent extraterrestrial force is at work. The crop circles that are manmade are quickly determined. No comparison to the authentic, intricate designs that cannot be reproduced. And if it was confirmed that crop circles are from beings or energy from another world or space. Would they tell us? Of course not. Remember there is no such thing as UFO's. We are all alone in this gigantic universe. LOL! Just go focus on Selene Gomez' break up. Now that’s important! So sad. Wake up people! There is a war on for your mind. Think for yourself.
      • Da Kraut 9 mths ago
It seems Harvard or and MIT tried to replicate the crop circles as a way to demonstrate that the Crop Circles were pranks played by some prankster but still with their all modern equipment, the team investigating could not finish it in the permissible time of the night, and let alone the number of MIT personnel involved as a team, which makes it difficult to hide a secret for too long.
    • remy  •  9 mths ago
why can't someone take a picture of someone/something doing a crop circle in the process?
    • erik  •  9 mths ago
Some crop circles are definitely man made hoaxes. But some of them are so amazingly complex that I find it hard to believe that it was done overnight by a group of hoaxsters. I want to see the proof that a group of people could make the complex crop circles, at night, with such precision.
    • Tao Te Ching  •  9 mths ago
As we all know though, physics magazine editors and university professors are still people too, so why is it we are automatically supposed to accept that they have all the answers?

And why is it that this subject is always automatically lumped into the category of "hoax"? With as much effort as is put into getting people to accept the phenomenon as a hoax, it would appear that there are a lot of debunkers who also clearly have too much time on their hands.

I guess everyone is supposed to automatically accept Yahoo News as having all the answers too though? Well thanks anyway, but I'll just keep an open mind.
    • John Barleycorn  •  9 mths ago
Crop circles?..hahaha..it's more like my ex-wife taking a dump in a field.
    • TCav  •  9 mths ago
Like "Big Foot" and "Homeopathy", crop circles are fodder for the gullible. Unfortunately, this doesn't shed any new light on the subject, just more misdirection.
    • Jôél  •  9 mths ago
How can someone who has never visited a crop circle even attempt to professionally rationalize their legitimacy? Come on people, understand that there are completely different wave frequencies used to create the formations. Which is why the stalks are singed at perfect 90 degree angles, and why cell phones don't work within the areas. I like facts, not Phd rambling.
    • Mike  •  9 mths ago
so what they are saying is crop circles are now made with advanced technology lets say... something aliens would definitely have?!
    • Myers  •  9 mths ago
What A #$%$ disinformation article. Good post by the aware below, to add to: how then has this been going on since the 70's without the advent of such proclaimed technology? So these people with this amazing gear that you espouse with to much time on their hands...they would be doing so for kicks? Or out of boredom? To play devils advocate and take the articles position, you really think they would do it just to mess with people. Even advertisers have a goal in putting up a billboard. These I feel are higher frequencies and this is the shape they make when they come thru this density in this multi verse.

If they can make crop circles with microwaves why do barbers still use clippers to cut hair? A hair cut should take 10 seconds.
