Organizer: 50,000 signatures to recall Wis. gov.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A spokeswoman for the coalition working to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says the group has collected 50,000 signatures in 48 hours.

United Wisconsin spokeswoman Meagan Mahaffey told The Associated Press on Thursday that the numbers are slightly ahead of their expectations.

Recall organizers need to average 9,000 signatures a day to get the 540,000 needed to force a recall election of the Republican governor. They want to go well above that number, however, in case some signatures are invalidated.

The recall drive began Tuesday and the deadline for returning the signatures is Jan. 17. It comes in response to Walker's successful push to take away nearly all public worker bargaining rights.

Mahaffey says more than 20,000 people have downloaded petitions from the group's website.

Serious question here...what's the fiscal status of Wisconsin since all of this happened?
      • IfYouSeeKay 6 mths ago
The Wisconsin Constitution requires that the state pass a balanced budget, where estimated revenues are equal to or greater than estimated spending. By this definition, the state budget is in balance.

Even with a balanced budget, Wisconsin has a structural deficit. A structural deficit occurs when ongoing revenues are less than ongoing spending. The structural deficit represents the gap between the amount of revenue raised and the amount of money needed to continue existing programs.

There are several ways the state can find itself with a structural deficit, yet still have a balanced budget. One common way in Wisconsin is to use one-time revenues to support ongoing costs. The Governor and Legislature are well versed in this technique. For example, their budget proposals might transfer money from a segregated fund to the General Fund, or delay a payment from one year to the next year in order to keep the budget in balance. Structural deficits also grow when lawmakers adopt deferred or phased‑in tax cuts that haven’t been paid for.

The problem is that although some sources of revenue are one-time, spending almost never is. Even big purchases like land or buildings are spread out over many years through the use of bonding, and thus have ongoing costs. Supporting ongoing services with one-time revenue sources will work for a while, but it will lead to a structural deficit and long-term difficulties.

The one thing baggers will NOT tell you is that Walker's first act as governor was to explode the state deficit tenfold with Massive tax breaks for the rich. Walker CREATED the budget nightmare, then claimed he had to bust the unions to balance the budget. Sound familiar? I am not kidding. You should be able to Google easy enough to verify.
      • Matt 6 mths ago
        Nate,

The budget is much more balanced since Governor Walker's initiatives have been active. It's about time government workers and school district employees pay there fair share and not continue to leech on the backs of taxpayers in this state. What Governor Walker is doing is working for WI.

If the LIBERAL Californians could recall a STUPID, INCOMPETENT, STUPID, LAZY, STUPID, EVIL governor, so can you, Tea Party 2 Year Old Retards in Wisconsin!

Recall ALL of them, in Winsonsin, in Washington DC. Governors, Congress men/women/children! Recall ALL of them! PLEASE, American People!

Now if only they would do that here in Illinois and recall that #$%$ Quinn but apparently people in illinois just love politicians that run the state into the ground.
      • Lloyd C 6 mths ago
The Chicagoland area is full of Democrats and outnumber the voters in the rest of the state. It's a shame. There are a lot of decent people living there.
      • erik 6 mths ago
well obama did come from there...
      • marvbaby 6 mths ago
Its the democrats and the unions...They are the problem in Illinois. Both of them tend to be criminals anyway . Throw the democrats out of office, disband the unions, elect a good honest republican and see if things don't start to turn around..If you don't believe this , look at the mess in Washington..Its being run by the Chicago political machine ! Throw them out in 2012. Be careful though because the machine and the unions will KILL to maintain power..

When you call the state government and find you talking to someone in India you'll finally realize this whole thing was for selfish gains. That's what recently happened in Georgia. The state contacted with JP Morgan Chase to run a "call center" service. JP Morgan outsourced to India while Geogians could have used those jobs...
      • rey 6 mths ago
Sometimes I do not blame these companies outsourcing, because they do not have to deal with the demands of the union. Look at China, no unions, guess what, they are more progressive now than us. We owe them now.
      • B 6 mths ago
How dare workers want decent wages ? Why would a company pay decent wages or benefits if they don't have to ? Face it ... corporate America wants the end of unions so they can treat workers the way they want when they want. Just like they do in India and China. Drop their tax rate to zero - repeal any so called job killing regulations and I guarantee their next excuse for not hiring is they need wages to match what they pay in India and China or they can't be competative. There will always be an excuse.
      • TJH 6 mths ago
You do not need unionized employees to work in a call center. When is the last time you have been to a place of business operated by government workers? I would rather talk to someone in India then someone in America who does not care about thier jobs much less the customers they are supposed to serve.

Once upon a time our Politicians worked for you and me.

How it is our Politicians get wealthy while our Nation and people suffer?

Eliminate all lobbyists and special interest!

Politicians turn lobbyists know full well who controls the money, what doors and tactics to use and who sits on what boards.

How can a congressman or senator with modest means…becomes rich while in office?

How many lobbyists vs members congress?

Who wrote the law that Politicians are above the law on insider trading?

Who knows more about a company’s offerings than a Politician?

It's time to end the loop holds once and for all!

Who allow politicians’ to write the rules and procedures for their income/raises/perks?

If the health insurance they are trying to pass is good for us, it's good enough for them.

Do you know what an elected politician income is when elected compared to when leaving office, should this be disclosed?

Since when did someone elected to serve become a career?

It’s not simple to solve these issues…but we can start by kicking them all out of office… and have We The People re-write the rules!

Will it take time, YES, would it be worth it?

For the love of our NATION, what choice do we have?

Looking ahead to the 2012 election, Ron Paul is the only candidate who: After years of Big Government, big spending, “politics-as-usual” policies from BOTH parties, Americans are ready for a return to limited government, free markets, sound money, and individual liberty.

Ron Paul predicted the current economic crisis years in advance and led the fight to prevent it - even as others running in this race were cheering on the disastrous government bailouts that have only dug us deeper into debt.

Ron Paul possesses a consistent conservative record of standing up for the Constitution - even when it means voting alone.

Ron Paul receives more donations from active duty military than all his Republican opponents combined!

Ron Paul has a detailed plan to cut ONE TRILLION dollars from the federal budget in the first year of his presidency and deliver a fully balanced budget by year three.

Need I say who I'm voting for, hope you do too!

This has nothing to do with this story but still interesting. Take a guess where 97 congress men and senators have there money invested (GE) and both Republicans and Demarcates and one Republican has 5 million invested. Ok now I'm a conservative and this sickens me to no end. It is time for a change the whole lot of them

When it comes to the export of American jobs I take the conservative isolationist view. Wall St can export all the jobs they want but they should not be allowed, by law, to import a single product produced overseas. Let'em sell their slave-labor shyt somewhere else. Since they f--ked Americans why should Americans be their customers?

Gunnar, you as the employee makes up the union. Those that are in Washington are there to protect their locals. So, like they say you make the party not the party making you! If, you feel you do not want to be apart of the union then don't. I have union workers, but I also have the best employees the world would want too! Just sayin

How about Illinois and Wisconsin switch governors? Here in Illinois we need someone to actually do something about our 13 billion of debt, and Wisconsin can have Quinn who has done nothing to get us out of debt and just keeps adding more (even though taxes have gone up).

The absolute best possible Christmas gift in many years for me would honestly be for Scott Walker to get kicked out of office and American politics! That's deeply sincere and I've been good all year long!
