Oscar Isaac Says His X-Men: Apocalypse Role Is Like Playing God
‘X-Men’ villain Oscar Isaac has teased the power of Apocalypse… as he reveals that playing the iconic villain is like playing God.
During an interview with Paste Magazine, the 36-year-old Marvel mutant explained what it’s like to join the ‘X-Men’ franchise… and hinted at the power of Apocalypse.
“I was a big fan of Star Wars,” he said. “I was also a big fan of X-Men, particularly the villain Apocalypse, so when those parts came around and there was interest for me to do them, I was excited about it. I was excited to explore those worlds. There is something more mythical… basically, you’re playing God. It’s a challenge.”

Of course, comic book fans already know the power of Apocalypse.
Considered to be the ancestral source of the mutant gene, En Sabah Nur (or Apocalypse as he becomes known) is one of the most powerful mutants in history. Possessing numerous mutant abilities, he has further enhanced himself with Celestial technology… giving himself even greater power.
Essentially, Apocalypse has complete control over the molecules in his body – allowing him to transform himself at will. Along with enhanced abilities such as superhuman strength and the likes of telepathy, telekinesis and the ability to project and absorb energy, he’s a hugely powerful opponent.
Oh, and he’s essentially immortal, too.
But how did Isaac feel about portraying this classic ‘X-Men’ villain?
“It was great because there’s an embodiment of such big ideas, you’re not working in the realm of naturalism,” he explained while talking to The Playlist. “And just because something’s natural doesn’t mean that it’s interesting — and I think Kubrick knew that very well. Sometimes it’s fun to push performance into other places that is not just about the same kind of verité thing. You can go to heightened places in a Greek tragedy or kabuki kind of way. You have these forms that express more than just an individual’s personality. And that’s been really fun to play with in X-Men.”
But will Apocalypse be the ‘X-Men’ villain we all want to see?
Fans haven’t exactly been enamoured with Bryan Singer’s design for the iconic Marvel baddie… and with comparisons to the ‘Power Rangers’ villain Ivan Ooze, it’s left some wondering whether the titular villain will live up to the hype.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see…
