Other Roles that Angelina Jolie and Kristin Chenoweth Can Share

As fate may have it, bubbly Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth and moody Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie are about to share a role. Just as Disney is going into high promotional gear for Jolie's Maleficent, the live-action take on Sleeping Beauty's villain, The Hollywood Reporter's Philiana Ng reported this morning that Kristin Chenoweth is taking on the same role in the Disney Channel's Descendants. Now, these are very different projects. Maleficent is an heir to the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland as a big-budget, CGI-loaded major motion picture with big box office hopes. Descendants, which is really about the kids of Disney villains, is going to be directed by Kenny Ortega of High School Musical fame.

But something just tickles us about the fact that these two actresses—one a tiny blonde with an impressive soprano; the other an imposing brunette movie star known for her humanitarianism—are sharing a part. What other roles in their resumes could they perhaps share? We investigate in a partially-serious way.

Angelina Jolie as Galinda/Glinda in Wicked

Yes, the Good Witch is the most obvious Chenoweth part to trot out. And yes Angelina Jolie does seem more like an Elphaba, based on her penchant for playing outcasts. But we imagine Jolie playing an edgier Galinda, whose mean girl antics in the first part of the show are truly threatening. Galinda by way of Heather Chandler.

Kristin Chenoweth as Lanie in Life or Something Like It

This 2002 rom-dramedy was a forgettable box office bomb. But maybe Jolie just wasn't right for the role of a TV reporter who gets a prophecy from a homeless man played by Tony Shalhoub. Maybe someone who has done some time as a TV host would actually be the better fit.

Angelina Jolie as April Rhodes in Glee

Look, William McKinley high school has already been graced by one star who gave an Oscar-winning performance in the '90s and has been a paramour of Brad Pitt. (Hi, Gwynnie!) So why shouldn't Angelina make a stop? Besides, the part is sort of a meaty one by Glee's standards: an alcoholic with a penchant for boxed wine and Broadway dreams that never came true.

Kristin Chenoweth as Jane Smith in Mr. and Mrs. Smith

We'd make the case for this one by pointing out that Chenoweth can do witty banter, but really this just here because we're imagining the alternate universe in which Chenoweth is person credited with breaking up Ben and Jen's marriage. (Or maybe in this world Aaron Sorkin plays Mr. Smith, in which case we'd be able to watch Kristin kick the crap out of him. Hmm...)

Angelina Jolie as Lily St. Regis in Annie

Chenoweth played the sultry ditz named after a hotel in Rob Marshall's (great) 1999 TV production of Annie. We bet Jolie has a Noo Yawk accent hiding somewhere, and she can re-up her hairdo from the aforementioned Life or Something Like It. Plus, she's already done Depression-era story about a missing kid, with Changeling. Will Gluck missed an opportunity

Kristin Chenoweth as Grendel's Mother in Beowulf

The animation—even motion capture animation—can mean Chenoweth's petite size won't be an issue. Plus, Jolie even got a soundtrack credit for this one. Think of what Chenoweth could do.
