    Ousted superintendent's unemployment bid denied

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The state has denied the unemployment claim filed by the ousted former head of Philadelphia's public school system after she received a $900,000 contract buy-out.

Arlene Ackerman says she had her claim denied last month and she won't appeal that decision.

Ackerman had requested the state maximum of $573 a week, based on her former salary of about $350,000. She was fired in August after clashing with community members, the teachers' union and elected officials.

Following her ouster Ackerman claimed the buyout was fair compensation because the district had broken a contract that was to run through 2014.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Labor and Industry said privacy laws prevent her from commenting on Ackerman's claim.

For once, a good decision by a government agency. I wonder what happened?

What audacity and petty greed. Hope she never gets another job.

I can hardly believe that someone with this money will ask the state to pay them with unemployment money. This money shouldn't be used for people with this kind of money in the bank. Yet, I know someone with lots of money getting unemployment who doesn't even want another job. So much waste and fraud, no wonder we are so in debt.

Stupidintedants are not worth that much, in reality they should get the same amount in pay as teachers

Wow, $350K a year and a $900K buyout. You teachers out there should be the ones raising heII about this. Instead what you have is people pointing out that people in unionized education get paid far too well considering that our schools are failing and they insist there is no method that can be used to judge their performance.
If you aren't on the streets complaining about people like this and other administrative officials who get these outrageous tax payer funded salaries while they cut education spending then you are a big part of the problem.

she should have gone into corporate banking instead of the public school system, but i guess she still managed to milk that for all it was worth. besides, the fact that she isn't appealing tells us that she never had the drive to make it as a banker anyway.

Typical leftist educator arrogance. She does a lousy job, gets a monster buyout at the taxpayers expense and yet she still want to milk the taxpayers for more.

Sounds more like the right wing of corporate America. Tax payer financed bailout & then stick to everybody with fees & demands for more tax breaks. Nothing leftist about this kind of greed.

California - The big difference is that corporate America doesn't rely on government for all their salaries and benefits. Do some of them abuse the tax system? Of course. Do some politicians abuse their power to ensure they can? You bet they do. And if you think it's just one side of the aisle...

No California, it IS very typical of leftist greed for taxpayer money.

I have to inject this into the conversation. Of late governors and others have complained about their counter parts giving into unions as well as state employees and giving them lucrative raises. Now! Give me a moment here to think about this. OK! Long enough, a women talks the school board into giving her a contract of 900,000 with clauses when she hires in? Just call me Provincial, Gullible and Naive here but something just doesn't just click here.
    • gov_matters  •  3 mths ago
I am confused here. They fired her, right? Then she received a 900,000 contract by out? And yes, you cannot receive unemployment if you were fired. Seems to me there is just a tad more going on here. If you are laid off and receive a buyout, there is a waiting period before you can start collecting unemployment. Also it does not matter if you are dirt poor or the richest person in the world if you have it coming then you have a right to collect it. I would fight the decision by the unemployment bureau only because the system gave her the 900,000. I agree if you are fired the you get nothing. I need to get this job I mean look at the profit you can make.
