Yes, resumes change in format and content frequently. In fact, after 20+ years as a professional executive resume writer I can date a resume almost to the year. What message does sending an old resume to a Recruiter, HR professional, or other influencer send? Blowing a thick layer of dust off an old resume and then hitting send simply demonstrates laziness when the image you need to portray is one of relevance possessing the current skills valued by employers.

Here are some dated resume components to avoid:

Objective Statement
The word “Objective” went out in 1999. Today the woozy verbiage “Seeking to secure a new position where I can utilize my education and work background” have been replaced by what I call the “ProJective”, a massaging together of the “Profile” and “Objective.” This section splits the hard skills from the soft skills and delivers a compelling message on the assets you can bring a future employer.

No Social Networking Addresses
Remember the days before LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Skype? Now it’s good career management to be active on these platforms. To provide the decision-maker with additional information include the links to your social media profiles on your resume. I haven’t written a resume since 2008 without a LinkedIn address and now all four platforms, along with Google+, are becoming the norm.

Outdated Technology And Skills
Portraying skills in outdated software and systems should be removed. Today it is automatically assumed that you are comfortable using MS Office Suite. You wouldn’t be submitting a resume online if you weren’t familiar with Word, Outlook, or similar email applications!

References Available Upon Request
Here’s a quick way to date yourself and instantly be eliminated! It is assumed you will provide appropriate references when asked, and not before. This four word sentence can be the one reason your resume was rejected in 7 seconds or less.

It takes work to get a new job and that work begins by updating your resume and hitting the delete button on your old one.
