Outrage explodes over rhyming 'diet' picture book

NEW YORK (AP) — Messages of good health and positive self-esteem for girls are not hard to come by in kid lit, so what's the deal with all the attention for a not-yet-published rhyming picture book about an obese, unhappy 14-year-old named Maggie?

The title, for starters: "Maggie Goes on a Diet."

For seconds, like-wildfire circulation of a blurb describing how the bullied girl is transformed through time, exercise and hard work into a popular, confident and average size soccer star. And cover art showing her wistfully holding up a Cinderella dress as she stares at her imagined, much slimmer self in a full-length mirror.

And an inside page, the only one most people have seen, that shows her hunched over the fridge during a two-fisted eating binge.

Thirds? Real teenagers have long moved on from rhyming picture books and the reading level for Hawaii dad Paul Kramer's amateurish, self-published effort is recommended on Amazon for kids ages 4 to 8.

The online mess for Kramer began recently with outraged commenters on Amazon, where pre-orders have not propelled Maggie anywhere near the top of the rankings. There is now a "savemaggie" hashtag on Twitter, a "Say No to Maggie Goes on a Diet" Facebook page, calls for a boycott and demands that Amazon and Barnes & Noble pull the book.

Kramer will not disclose how many orders he has for Maggie, which will not be in circulation until October. While most of the attention has been negative, he said, there are supporters, like this one who responded to a book basher on Twitter: "She's 14, not 6. Are you seriously suggesting that, with the obesity problem in this country, that a book teaching children to exercise and eat right, is somehow IMMORAL? I bet your fat."

Kramer, who went on "Good Morning America" and CNN to defend the book, already has regrets, although using the word "diet" is not one of them. Diet, he said, is not a dirty word as many of his angry critics have declared. Even for a book clearly most appropriate for little kids? He insists he didn't have 4-year-olds in mind, thinking more along the lines of 8 and up.

"The main message was that Maggie went on a diet predominantly because she loves sports and wanted to be able to run faster, bend more easily and be better able to play sports more effectively," Kramer told The Associated Press by phone from Maui, where he lives with his wife and soccer-loving, 16-year-old son.

Kramer, who struggled with obesity as a child and a young adult and still works to keep the pounds off, wishes Maggie's fantasy self in the mirror had not been quite so thin on the book's cover. He also wishes her transformation through weight loss had not been quite so much: 51 pounds in a little more than eight months.

"Now that I see the controversy I would say that I would have had her lose about 30 pounds and still have a little way to go," said Kramer, who is neither a physician nor a nutrition expert.

He said he is just a guy who wants to inspire overweight kids to be healthy.

"I regret that people associated the word 'diet' as me trying to push dieting on 4-year-olds and 6-year-olds. I'm not," Kramer said. "To me, diet means a change of habits, eating nutritiously, losing unhealthy weight."

Leslie Sanders, medical director of the Eating Disorder Program at Goryeb Children's Center in Summit, New Jersey, thinks Kramer's references to dieting in a rhyming picture book featuring a teen girl are unfortunate. The same goes for the notion that a child's key to success, beauty and popularity is being thin.

"There's a mismatch here," Sanders said. "You've got a rhyming book you're reading to a 4-year-old or a 6-year-old about a teenager focused on weight and eating. Why should young children be thinking about weight? There's no reason to have literature about dieting for young children at all."

In addition, most little kids don't sit down as Maggie the teen does once her "diet" begins and whip up their own oatmeal with yogurt and fruit, or prepare their own turkey sandwich with mustard and lettuce, followed by a dinner of vegetables "with various proteins," as the book describes.

You know who makes those choices for little kids? Their parents, Sanders said. The ones that do not appear in the book about Maggie the red pigtailed teen. In fact, there are no adults in the book at all.

That disturbs Arden Greenspan-Goldberg, a New York City psychotherapist who specializes in eating disorders and has a 22-year-old daughter.

"As women and mothers, we have our work cut out for us," she said. "We hope that when our girls look in the mirror, they like what they see."

Contrary to the online flash mob, Maggie does stand up to her tormenters in her own sad, quiet way.

"Most of the times Maggie did not wish to respond or counterattack," Kramer writes. "On rare occasions Maggie got so mad she could not hold back. She said, 'Is your life so boring that you have nothing else better to do? How would you like it and how would you feel if everyone picked on you? So lose your stinger and make like a bee and buzz on through.'"

Once Maggie drops the weight, she not only gains gal pals but enjoys the attention of, urg, guys, another little something that young girls do not really need to think about.

She also gets higher grades and is invited to her first sleepover, bringing along deodorant spray so she doesn't have to worry about leaving a smell when she uses the bathroom.

Meanwhile, back on the soccer field, the teen encounters a pudgy, smaller girl as she practices and offers some tips. "She reminded Maggie of how Maggie was before she lost the weight," Kramer writes.

The book concludes, as Maggie collects a soccer trophy: "It is sad that people are judged mainly because of how they look. A pretty cover does not necessarily guarantee a good book."

"Outrage!" "Explodes!" How much of a wimp nation are we? We wouldn't survive a major catastrophe with today's attitudes.

And when is Yahoo going to fix what ever is wrong with their news and comments section? There can't possibly be no comments yet, and I can never see or answer responses to my comments.

Because all those years of little serious talks from well meaning adults are so effective, we don't need something gentle and amusing.

Maybe he should have used a teen boy for his character.

imagine that you are a 12 year old girl and actually feel the way maggie does but NO ONE talks about it constructively. books are to educate. we like books that we can relate to. and maybe some skinny 12 year old girl can get a glimpse of what the over weight girl in her class is feeling like. over eating is an eating disorder just like anorexia and bulimia. compassion people!

its the parents who teach their children what to eat. its the parents who teach their children about racism. and its not white parents as much as black parents. i know that is not politically correct but just take a look and a listen.

stop telling kids they need to 'go on a diet' and start teaching them about a healthy diet. oh, wait, same applies to millions of obese adults in this country, too.

We are officially a FAT NATION when people are UPSET over a guy showing kids it's a good idea to try and stay a healthy weight at a young age. Being a fat 14 year old is terrible cause there's a much smaller chance of getting healthy later, but starting the kids age 4-6 saying "Eat an apple" over "Eat a cupcake" to me is a great thing!

We are NOT upset about trying to stay healthy. It is the way he did it. How about calling the book Maggie Improves Her Health and Soccer or Maggie Works Out to Make the Team. And telling 4-6 year olds about a 14 year old dieting is just ridiculous. He could have written a book for that age that promotes healthy eating and exercise without talking about dieting. A diet is a short term program. Healthy eating and exercise is a recipe for good health throughout your life.

As a real American, who was once a kid, I can say that there's nothing wrong with the concept. If the book is for children 4 to 8, the fact that teenagers are beyond picture books, is irrelevant. And the idea that a bullied girl changes through time and becomes more confident, excercises and starts to have more self esteem... There's nothing wrong with that idea, either. I also see nothing wrong with the title. What do people have against teens going on diets? It happens. When I was 11 through 14, I went on a diet, several times.

Children shouldn't go on diets. They're still growing. They need to eat healthy and exercise - not go on a diet.
      • Anonymous 8 mths ago
So telling a larger child to eat healthier and excersize is not a "diet". When i say im going on a diet thats exactly what I mean Im doing. DUH.

Unless the book is teaching kids that unless they look like Skeletor, they are fat, I say this is a whole bunch of nothing, and the author is happy he is getting free publicity.

Alright I get that there has to be something done about the weight epidemic in the US but does it really need to be aimed at the wee ones? I'm talking ten and below. This book is dealing more than just weight but boys, self esteem and bullies. If it was aimed at a higher age group than maybe it would be okay.

Get em while they're young. This is the policy of the tobacco industry, alcohol industry and worst of all, the Church.

I see that the problem is with adults, who think that they know better. Kids aren't stupid, if you teach them to be okay with themselves, they will be. If you don't, you won't be around to protect them from real problems.
    • Sir Stewie Griffin  •  8 mths ago
I don't see a problem...Kids today are BIG AND FAT and it is the fault of the parents....That's right I said it...It is the parents fault that kids are so damn BIG AND FAT....It starts with shutting the child up with candy to stop then crying and then stopping by the first fast food joint they see just to shut them up in the car...And buying them 64oz soft drinks & one pound bags of chocolate when going to the theater ...That's why KIDS ARE SO FAT..............

Obesity is a complex problem, just like drug addiction, homosexuality and homophobia, depression and teen suicide, bullying and the rest of the problems affecting today's youth.
Not having read the book, it is difficult to be on one side or the other. Dieting is ok, but teachning kids good nutrition from the very beginning will help avoid the need to diet in later life. On the other hand, equating obesity with ugliness and being thin with beauty and popularity is degrading, demeaning and usually produces the opposite of the desired effect.

Is it still possible in this country to write a book, fly a flag, display a religious symbol, make a speech, erect a Christmas tree, stop the removable of words from national songs, and any and everything other thing that offends these groups or individuals. Sure doesn't look like it we allow these people into America and at entry the hand over a list of what offends them. And that goes double for any group of people born in this country.

Is it me or does Maggie have a very Miyazaki-style look to her? Just an interesting observation.
    • Sassy  •  8 mths ago
It is a sad when you stop and think about how shallow we all are. No longer are we looking at the beauty within a person. Now all we do is cut this off, slim down that, plump up here and plump up there. No longer are we working on compassion and understanding of our fellow man. Now all we hear is not fatty this or no fatty that since they cause my truck to scrape asphalt, go eat a couple of hamburgers you're too thin you'll slip down the shower drain, you're ugly, you're gross. Face it we've become plastic dress up dolls with nothing on the inside.

Sounds like you are fat too.. Perhaps you should read the book

I'm all for finding the beauty in everyone. I'm outraged by having to pay good tax dollars for the self-induced disease of obesity, having to surrender half my airplane seat to the 350 pounder in the middle because it's become somehow politically incorrect to ask her to buy two seats, watching overweight parents stuff their overweight children with junk food, and generally having to tiptoe my speech around the feelings of people who don't value the incalculable gift of their own bodies. My compassion flew out the window around the twentieth time I was told by an obese person how easy it was for me to remain thin when I know for certain how much easier it is to be fat. Spare us your pleas, put down the second Big Mac with fries and climb on a treadmill like the rest of us have to!

And btw, I have a thyroid problem, I'm out of estrogen, I love doughnuts and hate exercise as much as the next person. I'm living proof you can control your weight if you really want to. Don't expect me to feel sorry for people who aren't prepared to make the sacrifices I have to just to maintain my health and then accuse me of being shallow or plastic. How f'ing dare you!
