    Pa. district bans fur-lined boots over cellphones

    POTTSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia middle school's ban on a popular type of fur-lined boots isn't about fashion, it's about cellphones.

    Pottstown Middle School parents were informed of the new ban on the unlaced boots on Wednesday.

    District community relations director John Armato tells the Pottstown Mercury (http://bit.ly/wwTP1g ) students are using the boots to hide cellphones and bring them into class. Current school policy allows students to bring their phones to school but requires them to be kept in their locker during the day.

    Armato says the ban targets the unlaced boots with fur or faux fur lining made by footwear companies including Ugg. It goes into effect Monday.

    Principal Gail Cooper says students can still wear the boots to school, but must remove them before going to class.

      There was a time when a teacher's caution was law. It needed almost no enforcement because the teachers commanded respect. The were dignified, they worse dresses or suits, no slacks or jeans for women teachers, and they led honorable lives outside the classroom. They were examples of dignity. In some cases today it is difficult to tell the teachers from students; it seems the teachers never grewup. It is little wonder they do not command respect; respect is earned not something demanded.

      Cell phones can be hidden other places on the body. Somehow, I don't think banning clothing would be practical given the winter weather in PA. Why would parents give cell phones to children that age when the child will be in school all day and would have to have it turned off anyways? When I was a child, we were not even allowed to use the office phone at school to call our parents. The school secretary made the call for us and that was only if we could manage to convince her that we really needed our parents and weren't up to something.

      This is just stupid. The kids will still find some way to sneak their phones into class. It's like banning some brand of tires because they've been known to be used on cars that drag race from stop lights.

      ban boots? how about banning the socks they stick them in? come on, if a student wants a cell phone in school, it's going to be in the school. "they" can't even keep them out of jails.

      As the ghost below said, what about cell phone jammers? Well, because that would disable teachers cell phones as well, and they won't allow that!

      Wise up, Philly kids. It's much easier to sneak a peek at your texts if you hide your phone in your backpack or purse & act like you're digging for a pencil. Administrators, take away the phones of rule-violators instead of the boots of all students. Kids will find a place to hide the phones & you can't keep taking away clothing items to prevent it.

        Pottstown students have to have clear backpacks so the teachers can see what is in their bags. Trust me, I'm from Pottstown and my sister got busted for it when she was in school a few years ago.

      It a rule for a reason if they break it kick them out of school for the year let the parents find a place for them to go to school and maybe the parents will make them follow the rules, its time they took a hand to their kids.

      Yea cellphones are a dangerous weapon. This is #$%$ teach the kids to read and write and trash all the superfulous crap. There was one time that chewing gum in class was agianst the rules.
