Pa. man busted on drug warrant after casino win

ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) — A man accused of dealing drugs had his luck run out when he won $2,500 playing blackjack at a casino near Philadelphia.

Altoona police say 34-year-old Mateen Johnson was arrested Saturday because he had to produce identification to cash out his winnings at Philadelphia Park Racetrack & Casino in Bucks County. Casino officials learned Johnson was wanted for drug offenses in Altoona and called authorities.

The Altoona Mirror (http://bit.ly/AfbcNp) reports Tuesday that Johnson told police he expected to be arrested soon and was trying to win enough at blackjack to make bail.

Online court records don't list an attorney for Johnson, who was wanted on separate drug delivery charges filed last year.

Johnson remained in the Blair County Prison on Monday.

So, is it legal for casinos to run a police check on people? As an employer, I'm not legally allowed to do that and I live right outside of Philly myself so the same laws should apply. Seems to me like the casino is trying to get out of paying the dough.

        Jimpsonseed,
Anybody can run a 'police check' on their employees anytime they want. When they sign the application they forfeit pretty much all their rights. They credit check applicants for fast food jobs now as well as the standard criminal records check. (Unless they're union, which has some minor protections.)

No,.you don't get direct access but all it takes is a phone call or two.

But yeah, how does winning some money translate into "may vee zee your papers pleez?".

        Taxes?

Sorry Greg, but you're wrong. It is illegal for me to run a police check on my employees in the state of PA without their permission. That actually applies in most, if not all, states. Now, as an individual, I can do it but as an employer, it would violate their right to privacy. All states have different rules, but in PA, I must have their permission AND the background check has to be relevant to the position in which they are being hired for.

Anyway, I can understand how the casino reserves the right to run a background check on an employee, but how do they have they right to do it on a patron?

This is as funny as it gets. A casino that's run by the Mob, calls the police on a drug dealer. You talk about taking out the competition.

Sounds like a Casino that no one should gamble at, they went as far as run a check on warrants before paying? Seems they will do everything they can not to pay if you win! Maybe they check to see if you paid taxes on time next? Maybe behind on a house payment? Maybe Child support? Any one that gambles here after this news is out of their mind.

How is it a private entity (casino) has access to criminal database?
      • tim 3 mths ago
gotta pay taxes on the winnings
      • Toll_Free 3 mths ago
Tim. They are required to NOTIFY the IRS of your winnings. That, IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, should give them access to NJCIC or NCIC.

If you win more than $10,000 you have o fill out an IRS document. If you look under 21 the casino will card you. Usually for $2500 the casino will not card you. He was carded for a reason.

I know guy that was collecting welfare for about a year in new york . He eventually got a job and went back to work . Then he had the good fortune to win $10,000 with a scratch off lottery ticket . When he went to cash the ticket at the lotto office , he was shocked when they only gave him $1,000 in cash . The rest was confiscated by the state govn . The moral to this story is : If you have been on public assistance , or owe the govn back taxes, better get a friend or relative to cash it in for you if it pays more than 600 to 1

Since each state regulates and licenses gaming within their state, some report child support arrears to the casinos to capture deadbeats' winnings. Sounds like Pennsylvania shares drug warrants with their casinos, too, just in case they catch some one.

That is very scary, win some money, and thieves don't have to pay out cause they ran you through a CCIC data base. Thought only law enforcement had access to that information? I guess all companies and corporations are part of the police state now.
