Packham infuses 'Picnic' clothes with '70s flavor

NEW YORK (AP) — Jenny Packham infused her spring collection at New York Fashion Week with a little flavor from the 1970s. There was a casual ease to the clothes without sacrificing glamour.

There were scarflike halter-neck tops and palazzo pants, and drop-waist dresses and a fully beaded T-shirt dress. The inspiration for Tuesday's spring preview started with the 1975 movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock," an Australian film set in a boarding school at the turn of the 20th century.

"So it was a little Edwardian, a little '70s rock 'n' roll, and we thought it all had an upbeat mood," she said in a backstage interview. She carried the theme through with fancy jeweled embellishment on easy-to-wear gowns.

Actress Christina Hendricks was in the front row, following the list of looks closely. "I love Jenny Packham. I think it's so gorgeous. It all sort of has a nice shimmer, and it's so playful."

If Packham were to host the most glamorous picnic, she has her guest list at the ready: Marlene Dietrich and President Barack Obama. What about the first lady? "She can come, too."
