Pakistani Taliban kill 7 soldiers, abduct 4

PARACHINAR, Pakistan (AP) — Islamist militants attacked a Pakistani army checkpoint near the Afghan border Friday, killing seven paramilitary soldiers and abducting four, a government official and a Taliban spokesman said.

Jamil Khan, a local official, said around 40 militants armed with rockets, grenades and automatic weapons attacked the army post in the Kurram region, sparking a gunbattle that killed up to 18 militants.

The ambush was the latest in a series of attacks over the past week in Kurram, one of the seven Pakistani border regions where the military has battled militants for several years.

It was not possible to independently confirm the information because the border region is effectively off-limits to reporters. Militants have in the past disputed army accounts of casualties, and human rights groups say civilians often die in military actions.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to reporters. He did not mention any insurgent casualties.

Also Friday, a car bomb exploded outside the residence of a tribal elder in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing four people and wounding three, senior police officer Fazal Wahid said.

The blast appeared to target the elder, Haji Astana Gul, who was not hurt in the attack, Wahid said.

Associated Press writers Rasool Dawar and Riaz Khan in Peshawar, Pakistan, contributed to this report.

Correct me if i'm wrong but there are hundreds of taliban operating inside Pakistan not only killing americans and afghanistans but hundreds of Pakistanis also..Pakistan has thousands in thier army not to mention all kinds of arms, helicopters and planes but they never order thier military to go into a region where the taliban is operating and destroy them..The question not only for the world to answer but for the peaceful loving Pakistani people is why the government lets them keep killing thier people without ordering thier military to retaliate and destroy them..It is after all thier country and they should want to end the problem even more then we do shouldn"t they?

How does a culture get left so far behind in history?
      • Michael 3 mths ago
By choice, if you spend anytime in that region like I have, they choose to be like this. Afghanistan will never be a cultural country with education, good infrastructure and so on. They just do not want it. They have a different way of life. Kill or be killed, protect what you have, take what you can and then move on.

Now that's funny! Pakistan supports the Taliban and the Taliban attacks and kidnaps Pakistani soldiers! When will they ever learn?
      • Paul 3 mths ago
no, when will WE ever learn? just buy their oil, send them checks, back off and let them deal with their own savagery.
      • Rudi 3 mths ago
As far as I know, the US gets no oil from either Pakistan or the Taliban, so your comment makes no sense.

If Taliban insurgents are continually attacking and killing Pakistani soldiers, one would think the Pakistani military would be more willing to aid NATO in eliminating the Taliban, but nothing in this war makes sense. Bring our troops home and let the Afghans fend for themselves.

Pakistan created the Taliban in 1996. There is no differance between the Pakistani or Afghan Taliban as they are all Pashtun Pakistani invaders of Afghanistan who flee back to the so called tribal area when beaten by Nato etc. Pakistan has reaped what it has sown. It is hard to feel sorry for Pakistan considering they are indirectly responsible for 911 due to their creation of this Taliban which protected Bin laden. Hmmm, did we not find this tourist Bin Laden 7000 yards from Pakistans West Poinyt and kill him?

Sounds like we need to put a stop to arms trafficing. If we could cut off their RPGs and Grenades that would limit their abilities substantially.

Pakistan must have one #$%$ poor army if it only takes 40 people to waste a base. Stop giving aid to these idiots. They just give it to Taliban and Al quada.

Afghanistan has always been the cold war favorite place for war-on-my-behalf type of war. When Russia went there, the US gave support to Taliban and Mujahedeen's. Now the US is there and it's payback time for the Russians. Enemy of my enemy is kind of my friend. I give them weapons to kill each other and bankrupt the other country......

when are we going to learn? these people have been fighting among themselves as far back as recorded history goes. they also have a history of attacking everyone who tries to help them become more civilized. do we really think we're going to save them from their own habits? not very likely. we can't afford them anymore, they have no regard for civilized social structure. back off, let them all kill each other and-with all due respect for religious beliefs-let Allah sort them out. it's that simple-we don't need a PhD from Cambridge to comprehend this. #$%$
