Palestinians say Russia supports bid for state

MOSCOW (AP) — A top Palestinian official said Tuesday that Russia is supporting his government's bid to seek recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations this fall.

Nabil Shaath, head of a Palestinian delegation that met Tuesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, said "our plan to go to the United Nations will get support from Russia."

He didn't specify exactly what he meant by Russia's "support," and the Russian Foreign Ministry wouldn't comment on Shaath's claim.

U.N. membership requires a recommendation from the Security Council and approval by two-thirds of the General Assembly, or 128 countries.

With the U.S. poised to veto the approval of Palestinian statehood at the U.N. Security Council, the Palestinians plan to turn to the General Assembly, whose decision would be nonbinding but could send a strong international message and put heavy pressure on Israel.

Shaath, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said, however, that the Palestinian campaign for statehood will not replace his nation's determination to resume stalled peace talks with Israel.

"Going to the United Nations is not a substitute for going to negotiations," he said, voicing hope that Russia's mediation will help resume peace talks.

The Palestinians insist they will not resume peace talks until Israel stops building settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem — areas it captured in the 1967 war and which the Palestinians claim for their future state.

Israel maintains that the Palestinians should not be setting conditions for talks and that settlements didn't stop them from negotiating in the past.

Russia is a member of the so-called "Quartet" of Mideast peace makers along with the United States, the European Union and the United Nations. The group is set to meet in Washington next week to spur the resumption of the talks.

Lavrov said the aim of talks by the Mideast Quartet is the creation of an "independent, democratic Palestinian state."

Maybe Israel should support a plan for an independent Chechnyia?

I think it is immature for people to be against Israel when they CAN prove that the land they are on was their LONG before the first so called palestinian was born. In fact it was not until the Romans came was the area called Palestine. The Romans renamed it alestine to erase the name Israel as they dispersed the Jews to keep them subjugated. Reading a Western Civilization history book would have told you that. So if we want to be honest, sincere and forthright.....Israel has no need to negotiate a palestinian state but if they do, they do so out of their generosity not because of any law or need by others.

If the results were reversed in 1967 would the "Palestinians" be willing to give up even one inch of territory. I did not think so.

Why should they give up any land to the jews? The land is THEIRS!!!
      • A Yahoo! User 10 mths ago
Why do you think the land belongs to the Arabs/"palestinians"? The Jews have been in the land longer so why don't you think it should be theirs? The Jews are the only nation to have enjoyed sovereignty in that land for the past 3,000 years, and they enjoyed that more than once. The Arabs have always lived there under occupation; they have never had sovereignty or a king or kingdom or a real government with laws, a judicial system, a monetary system, etc.

Why wouldn't the Palestinians have it? They won it and it wasn't given to them by 'god.'

I hate all the talk of Israel giving back the land they won from the 1967 war. It was a war, they won, and as a result come the spoils. Is America going to give back Texas to the Mexicans? Hell no, we fought the Mexican army and won that land. If they want it back they are welcome to start a war with us to get it. And that truly is the answer for Israel, forget this peace talk progress that goes nowhere, if the Palestinians want the land back, feel free to invade Israel, and after the jews destroy you for a second time, maybe you will stop complaining.

true, the arabs lost because they were weak, still are. middle east is a violent mess because they want weak losers to rule to land. to the victor goes the spoils. the strong will improve the land and that is called progress. when the weak and stupid are allowed to govern you have the chaos and violence that is present in the gaza strip, west bank, and much of the muslim countries.

America couldn't give back Texas if they wanted to. America doesn't own Texas.

now...."Honest John"......there's a practiced Jihadist. Reality, Native, King, and the rest of the Islamo-Fascist Circle Jerk could learn from a Taqqiya peddler like him. that's the kind of smile that says, "women and children to the right."

The Russians caused the current mess in the M.E. by kicking out the Khazars from the Caucusus 1300 years ago, so naturally they feel it's time now to make amends.

Compromise plan: No Israel; no Palestine.

Unite the region. Call it the Holy Land. Run it by a secular government that recognizes neither race nor religion.

Only a matter of time. The Palestinians will have their country of Palestine and Israel knows it. Too bad they cannot do the right thing, instead even further alienating the whole world and making their puppet America look like the fool.

There is already a Palestinian state, it's temporarily called Jordan.

The Corpocratic governance of the US is a farce. Two political parties bought off by corporate interests and run from a board room, and one non party with no voice. Save your corpocracy for your ignorant masses.

A one state plan with equal rights (voting, security, property, religious practice) still is the best option. But, since no one really believes in DEMOCRACY anymore, I hope this two state solution works.

That 9-11 was a mossad job is obvious- who else planted the explosives that brought down WTC 7? AIPAC will also be demolished, with its members swinging from lamp posts.
