Palmetto Goodwill expands ‘I-CAN’ reentry program into Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Palmetto Goodwill announced it is expanding their “I-CAN” reentry program into Horry County.

The program allows justice-involved residents in the area who are seeking employment the opportunity to gain work experience and career services at no cost.

The program, which was first launched in North Charleston in 2023, includes 12 weeks of paid training paired with client-based support for individuals aged 18-years or older.

Participants will spend the first two weeks in classroom training. Once completed, they can begin working and gain experience and additional coaching.

Mary Ann Gilmer, the vice president of mission services, talked about how important this program is for these individuals.

“What we have found is when they seek out services and they really look at getting a supportive environment for themselves, they are 90% likely to stay on the job and retain with whoever takes them on as a team member,” Gilmer said. “We know that it drastically reduces the percentage of people who return to incarceration. Our vision is that every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive.”
