    Panetta laments growing Israeli 'isolation'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called on Israel Friday to "reach out and mend fences" with Turkey, Egypt and other security partners in the Middle East, saying he is troubled by the Jewish state's growing isolation in the volatile region.

He also urged Israeli leaders to do more to restart peace talks with the Palestinians and underscored President Barack Obama's determination to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He called Iran "a very grave threat to all of us" and said any Iranian disruption of the free flow of commerce through the Persian Gulf is a "redline" for the U.S.

In a speech at a Brookings Institution forum, Panetta said that while Israel is not solely responsible for its isolation, it could more actively attempt to reverse the trend.

"For example, Israel can reach out and mend fences with those who share an interest in regional stability — countries like Turkey and Egypt, as well as Jordan," he said. "This is not impossible. If the gestures are rebuked, the world will see those rebukes for what they are. And that is exactly why Israel should pursue them."

Panetta, who made his first visit to Israel as Pentagon chief in October, said it is in the interests of Israel as well as Turkey — which is a NATO ally of the United States — to reconcile. He said he would take that message to Ankara when he visits there in two weeks.

He urged the Israelis to address its concerns about Egypt's political revolution through increased communication and cooperation with Egyptian authorities, "not by stepping away from them."

Addressing an issue that is in the primary domain of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Panetta urged Israel to "lean forward" to achieve peace with the Palestinians. Peace talks have been moribund for more than a year.

"Rather than undermining the Palestinian Authority, it is in Israel's interests to strengthen it by ... continuing to transfer Palestinian tax revenues and pursuing other avenues of cooperation," he said.

Panetta spoke starkly of the challenge of Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"No greater threat exists to the security and prosperity of the Middle East than a nuclear-armed Iran," he said, adding that Obama has not ruled out using military force to stop Iran from going nuclear.

In a question-and-answer session with his audience after his speech, Panetta was asked what Israel should do to get peace talks back on track.

"Just get to the damned table," Panetta replied.

In response to questions about Iran, Panetta also laid out in detail his thinking on the arguments against an Israeli or U.S. military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

He said such an attack would "at best" delay Iran's nuclear program by one or two years. Among the unintended consequences, he said, would be an increase in regional support for Iran and the likelihood of Iranian retaliation against U.S. forces and bases in the Mideast. It also would have harmful economic consequences and could lead to military escalation, he said.

"We have to be careful about the unintended consequences" of an Israeli or U.S. attack, he said.

it is time we became isolationist again... bring the troops home... cut foreign aid to ALL countries... secure our own borders... let other countries fight their own battles... and finally, fix the economy...

#$%$ not that easy - isolationism is a sure pathway to war. One must be ever vigilant, and assertive when our interests are at stake.

That's silly how you said fix the economy and become isolationists in the same statement... silly because we are now an interconnected world like never before and there's no going back

The Federal Government should only spend the Peoples Money for the direct benefit of American People and no others. Our Constitution never stated that the Peoples money be used to maintain other nations or fight their battles. The Federal Government is nothing but a caretaker of the real power, The U.S. Citizenry, but it acts in many ways like a dictator, squandering Billions on projects that do not create a better qauilty of life for those of us who are paying for it!

Fighting the enemy on their ground and not ours counts. putting our civillians in harm's way is not.

Let the countries in the ME solve their differences without American tax dollars. We're just sick of having to be dragged into this mess 24/7.

It will be our problem soon enough. They have stated that they want to do away with Israel and the USA...

Sure what do we care if a few million Jews are massacred by the Arabs? The Holocaust happened once and if I can do anything about it it will never happen again.
      • maralusa 5 mths ago
why is no one talking about the holocausts after WW II. in Cambodia, Africa, China, Sudan and many other places? Should that not have been part of a mission of the jewish people never to let that happen again?

think panetta is wrong about iran being the greatest threat. It is pakistan which already has nukes and champions terrorists. It doesn't matter how much money we throw at the back stabbing pakis, eventually they will miniaturize a nuke and send a crew to our shores just like they did in Mumbai.
      • littlecat 5 mths ago
And we bought the Paki's their nukes by giving them foriegn aid.

Greatest threat in the Middle East he said. Pakistan isn't in the Middle East. Moreover, Pakistan's leaders are "Us friendly"... Yeah I know not for ral, but to an extent. Iran is openly anti ISA and calls for our destruction. Eother way, Pakistan isn't in the Middle East and Paneta said Middle East and Iran is in the Middle East.

We have a separation of a church and state here in America, so why does our government send money to other countries that do not?

"Just get to the damned table," Panetta replied.

Can't believe anyone in official Washington would make this statement. Didn't anyone tell Panetta that ANY CRITICISM of Israel is now considered Antisemitic and will get you fired.

In less than 18 months Islamist governments will rule Tunis, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Yemen (no border with Israel but scores of young fighters with boundless hatred for the apartheid state).

A convoy of AA guns, HMGs, RPGs, etc. is making its way across North Africa and being de-assembled for the trip to the tunnels to Gaza. Fighters who tore Tripoli from the Colonel’s fist are learning the ways of Hamas and adapting to eastern Arabic slang and cadence – different from their North African homelands.

Iran is funneling Russian and Chinese made arms and U.S. dollars to Hezbollah and other allies. The regimes that take root in Jordan and Syria will re-constitute their armies towards one unified enemy.

All the nukes of Dimona cannot save Israel from this onslaught – they may not re-take Jerusalem but they can make Israel look like Beirut in the 80s and see tourism and FDI drop to near zero.

Unemployment in Israel will soar as will inflation, gasoline, etc. delivered by heavily escorted us freighters will cost the U.S. tax payer a fortune – well beyond the $4 billion we spend to prop up this criminal regime.

If I were an Israeli I would search the public records for second homes of the most prominent business and government officials – London, New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles. Hmmmm maybe they know something the JPost doesn’t want to print.

They are a bunch of Kastners who will take their family and friends and leave the rest to die like the poor victims of Shoah I.

Lets hear it for the majority, We are a Democratic Republic based on our constitution and bill of rights! If we were just a democracy then all these squeaky wheels that seem to be running this country now would be shut down and sent away by the over whelming majority. So lets take back our country.

Sadly, Israel becomes more and more of an isolationist state. It seems it is "pulling in," in preparation for the worst - a massive war with some of its neighbors and possible annihilation.

Why isn't Panetta troubled by our deficit? Unemployed Americans? The open border?

I don't remember Panetta being Israel's Defense Secretary.
