Paramount Dates ‘Jack Reacher 2’ For October 2016

Paramount said today that the Tom Cruise action vehicle Jack Reacher 2 will be opening on October 21, 2016. The sequel reunites Cruise with his Last Samurai director Edward Zwick, who along with Marshall Herskovitz is rewriting Richard Wenk’s script. Skydance is co-producing. Jack Reacher 2 takes the place of Warner Bros./Skydance’s Geostorm which exited the October release date yesterday for MLK Weekend 2017. Jack Reacher 2 will battle Universal’s Ouija 2 and Sony/Screen Gems’ Underworld 5 during that frame.

Based on the bestselling books by Lee Childs, the first Jack Reacher was a huge overseas success for Paramount, raking in $138.3M to domestic’s $80.1M. Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed the original, which cost $57M. The Jack Reacher stories revolve around a former MP who roams the country, investigating dangerous situations. McQuarrie and Cruise recently delivered Paramount’s highest-grossing film of the year with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation which has made close to $480M worldwide to date.

Paramount also announced that its untitled Richard Linklater film is now titled Everybody Wants Some. That film will open on April 15, 2016.
