Parking garage being built in California collapses

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A portion of a parking garage under construction in downtown Los Angeles collapsed on Friday but no one was trapped or hurt, authorities said.

Traffic was briefly snarled when a section of the structure measuring about 50 by 75 feet came down in a high density, heavily congested area near county jails and a downtown transit plaza.

"Fortunately we have heard that all workers have been accounted for," said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

A Fire Department search and rescue team checked but found no one trapped under the debris.

Scott said the second floor of the garage crashed down onto the first floor. The cause wasn't immediately known.

The collapse appeared to be contained to a corner of the structure.

The garage is going up on a 3-block-long construction site adjacent to the west side of the Los Angeles River.
