Part of Newport's famed Cliff Walk closed after suffering extensive damage from Sandy
NEWPORT, R.I. - A large portion of Newport's famed Cliff Walk has been closed because of extensive damage from Sandy.
City Manager Jane Howington tells The Associated Press that about half of the 3.5-mile walk was closed after part of the path and a retaining wall washed away and fencing was knocked down. She has no damage estimate yet but says it will take significant work before the path can be made safe.
The walk along Newport's eastern shore is one of the city's top attractions.
Howington says the historic mansions open for public tours had some trees down and a few windows blown out but otherwise fared well. She says the rotunda and bathing houses at Easton's Beach were "pretty well destroyed."
