    Pat Buchanan out at MSNBC

NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC dropped conservative commentator Pat Buchanan on Thursday, four months after suspending him following the publication of his latest book.

The book "Suicide of a Superpower" contained chapters titled "The End of White America" and "The Death of Christian America." Critics called the book racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic, charges Buchanan denied.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin said last month that he didn't think Buchanan's book "should be part of the national dialogue, much less part of the dialogue on MSNBC."

The network said on Thursday that "after 10 years, we have decided to part ways with Pat Buchanan. We wish him well."

Buchanan, in a column posted on Thursday, called the decision "an undeniable victory for the blacklisters."

The former GOP candidate had seemed increasingly out of place on MSNBC as it emphasized liberal commentary in recent years. But he kept a regular presence, even forging an unlikely chemistry with talk show host Rachel Maddow despite disagreeing on most issues.

Buchanan wrote that advocacy groups like Color of Change and the Anti-Defamation League brand people as racists or anti-Semites if they dare "to venture outside the narrow corral in which they seek to confine debate." They seek to silence and censor dissent while proclaiming devotion to the First Amendment, he said.

"I know these blacklisters," he wrote. "They operate behind closed doors, with phone calls, mailed threats and off-the-record meetings. They work in the dark because, as Al Smith said, nothing un-American can live in the sunlight."

The liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America said that MSNBC made the right decision in letting Buchanan go.

The book "was not his first, nor his worst offense," said Ari Rabin-Havt, executive vice president of Media Matters. "He's been making the same racially insensitive, anti-Semitic and homophobic statements for the past 50 years."

MSNBC has no credibility anyway. They censor, blacklist, and use Nazi propaganda techniques to mind warp their already slow audience. No one watches them unless they're brain dead anyway. FREE SPEECH FOREVER! Hail to the 1st Amendment!

I always thought this was what the First Admendment was all about -- different ways of thinking. I guess now it is if you like the way I think then it is ok, if you do not then I will ban it. Sad day in America. Where is ACLU? Oh that's right he is a conserative so they will not jump in there.

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

To the president of the American Defense Society on January 3, 1919

Why is it OK for EVERY other ethnic group in this country to discuss itself, advocate for their "agenda" (that it's considered good to have a separate ethic agenda seems to bother nobody), celebrate their separate history, and on and on?

        Two words: Leo Trotsky.

@Johnny Rotten: You're just the sort of paranoid that Pat Buchanan can cozy up to. Happy Honeymoon, you two!

True free speech is dying quickly in this country. It's been replaced by "political correctness". To be PC means that you are essentially censored!!!!!!!! And we talk about "freedom" in this country. It's time to drop that word.
      • laura 3 mths ago
Have to agree, Dennis.......The easy way out these days......you don't like my view, what I have to say on an issue? No problem. Just call me a racist, anti-american and the discussion is over, leaving me exposed as the bad guy/girl.

Ceonsorship in the land of the free? Yes, that is exactly where we're at.
      • Franky 3 mths ago
Dennis, 'freedom of speech' only applies to the relationship between government and its citizens, NOT your place of work or anywhere else. Sorry about that.
      • Oldsarge 3 mths ago
The network has the right to fire anyone they want. This isn't a free speech issue. You have the freedom to say anything you want without government interference. This freedom does not extend to protection from your employer being able to fire you for what you say.

I'm mostly a liberal, but when the high school where I work allowed a teacher to have a separate Latino graduation, I couldn't help feeling pretty #$%$ annoyed and imagined the results if anyone had even dreamed of holding a separate Caucasian graduation.
      • Bury Your Competition 3 mths ago
Which one? and what was the intention of this teacher? You're too general. I've seen people here make up some crap just to bring support to their personal agenda....
      • Gazprom Executive 3 mths ago
@Elisabeth, BYR is right; This sounds like something made up and plus you don't even go into details into this event even if it was true. Unless, you have something else to say.
      • wintershall 3 mths ago
Really, Elisabeth, because I am in serious doubt, that actually happened. Maybe, you're just excluding relevant information that may seem less offensive to serve your own agenda.

What I, really like most about "Pat Buchanan" is that he will slam both the left, and the right when it suites him........ with no apologies later! You can't find that kinda person on the big flat square tube channels anymore.

I disagree with just about every thing the right wing likes of Pat Buchanan stands for, however, this kind of makes me cringe: "MSNBC President Phil Griffin said last month that he didn't think Buchanan's book "should be part of the national dialogue" - like as if we want HIM determining for US what the national dialogue should be?

Every demographic study shows he's right. In 25 years, Caucasians will be the minority. Already the case in Cali

Well, now I want to read his book to see what all the brouhaha is about. Pat was one of the few conservative commentators that spoke against the Bush misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq from the very start. He predicted a political disaster and he was proven right. I don't agree with many of his opinions but he makes a person think. I'm sure the groups that wanted his ouster haven't read the book. The chapter titles were more than enough for them. The powers that be at MSNBC are pathetic for knuckling under.

Hey MSNBC and 'others', sometimes the truth hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • CB  •  3 mths ago
I'm a Democrat...and I like Pat. Do I agree with him? Sometimes. He speaks honestly and doesn't spout the party "message". It's a shame when differing viewpoints are no longer welcome. There's nothing wrong with honest, intelligent debate. It's become a rarity.

He got his free speech however not everyone will agree with you wether it be your boss or friends. The 1st amendment allows you to say and write what you want it doesnt say your job is protected when you do it. Look at Fox the race baiting and lies are there everyday, lol instead of being suspended or fired they get raises. Fox News is much liek a Jerry Springer episode at best. Pat is a racist has been for years. He wrote a book which is his right but his employer has a write to fire him for doing so. I doubt anyone commenting here has one read the book. 2 they clearly do not understand the 1st Amendment.

If you don't like what you see or hear on the TV, you do have the option to use your remote and change the channel don't you? Well... like voting, that sends a message

I'm sure none of us agree with everything Pat B says, but every one of us should be frightened and angered by the thought process behind Griffen's statement that he doesn't believe Pat's book should be part of the national dialogue. At least now we know that MSNBC does not believe in and won't fight for free speech and individual rights unless it suits them. One more channel to put on the "delete" list.
