Pat Buchanan: Reagan White House saw Newt as ‘something of a political opportunist’

Over the last week, several people that worked in the Reagan administration have come forward and countered former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s claim that he is a “Reagan Republican.” These people say Gingrich “wasn’t on board with a lot of what President Ronald Reagan tried to accomplish during his two terms.”

And although that claim has been disputed by other Reagan administration officials, former Reagan communications director Pat Buchanan told “The McLaughlin Group” this weekend that Gingrich wasn’t seen favorably by those in the administration.

“[I]n the Reagan White House, Newt Gingrich was considered quite frankly by a lot of folks to be something of a political opportunist and who was not trusted and who had played no role whatsoever,” Buchanan said. “He was a Rockefeller Republican in the great Goldwater-Rockefeller battle, where conservatism came of age.”

Buchanan also theorized that Gingrich stumbled in two debates this week because he was caught off guard by all these people who turned on him.

“I do think this, though. Newt has been pounded merciously,” Buchanan said. “He had people he worked with basically turn on him and dump on him down there in Florida, which somehow I think may have had some role in the fact that the great fighter and battler of South Carolina had no fight in him whatsoever in the Monday and Thursday debates in Florida.’

“He let Mitt Romney punch him silly. And he has lost all his momentum. And John, I’m not going to make any predictions because I thought the battler of South Carolina would win Florida, but Romney is surging and it looks like Romney may win Florida. And if he does, it’s all over.”

Later Buchanan reiterated his criticisms of Gingrich, recalling his opposition to Reagan’s 1986 veto of a South African anti-Apartheid sanctions bill and about how Gingrich used it to score points against Reagan.

“I don’t think he has a core,” Buchanan said. “I don’t think he has a fundamental, ideological and political core. I think, look he moved, he was a Rockefeller Republican, he comes up — I remember meeting him in ’78 when he came to town, you know he is knocking Reagan. … Reagan believed that sanctions on South Africa would cripple the economy that the Africans would inherit. So it was a tough decision. Reagan vetoed it. And he scored points off us by you know voting for the sanctions and doing that. I don’t think he has an ideological core. I think he moves from one issue to another to another.”

One thing this liberal likes Reagan for. When governor of California he legalized abortion more than three years before Roe v Wade (summer of 1969) and had MediCal pay for it

Why do you keep talking about Reagan? The man was half brain dead most of his time in office. He had to let his dumb a-- wife run the Country most of the time because he didn't know what time of day it was.

There are many things which many people seem to forget...regarding good ol' Newt and Ronald. Funny thing is that most conservatives rave about Ronald even though he was a democrat most of his life and his supposed lowering of taxes gave me and most others in my income bracket an actual 3 percent increase, NOT lowering taxes at all. Then there was the tremendous debt incurred from his 'star wars' fantasy...not to mention the continuation of the process of a US president carrying on a covert war behing the backs of the people...why have a Constitution when you think you are king? I suppose I can't complain since my job was part of the government 'star wars' fiasco...and Oliver North did refuse to testify as he waved his American flag. So much forgotten...including present day 'conservatives' failing to mention Reagan left office with enormous debts which were swept asside for suceeding presidents to deal with...but I'll concur Newt is even worse and hopefully won't ever get to the whitehouse though with the lot of democrats and republicans we have now I don't see how any of this matters.

Pat forgets to mention that Newt sided with the neo-cons when George Schultz convinced Reagan to establish a working relationship with the Soviets.
Gingrich said that Reagan's meeting with Gorbachev was the most dangerous meeting for the West since Chamberlain met with Hitler. In other words, according to Newr,Reagan was guilty of appeasment.
You can't say that Reagan is your hero and guilty of acting like Neville Chamberlain. That doesn't make any lick of sense.

How does a "Historian" turned "College Professor" turned "Congressman" turned US Presidential Candidate go from middle class existence to a net worth of $32 Million?

I don't know any multi millionaire Historians.
I don't know any multi millionaire College Professors
I don't know any Historian or College Professors that can drop $500,000 for Jewelry for their mistress from Tiffany's

The $1.6 million ("not" Lobbying) history consulting fee from Fannie Mae is just the tip of the iceberg. He must have made the other $30+ million in some other TBD illegitimate way! And no one is surprised including me

Newt Gingrich taught the GOP to use words to create bombs, and now they are using his own tactics against him. Buchannan's words, "I don’t think he has a fundamental, ideological and political core" read more like a Gingrich quote. Delicious.

Couple of decades? I am in my sixties and can tell you first hand it is much longer than that. The last I can remember was already a millionaire, Kennedy may not have been perfect but had more real metal than anyone since his time. You know what they did to him. Even Johnson was liar following him. Sad but true, it has been around five decades.

These bastrds are all political oppertunists. They run for office for one and only one reason, and that is self gain. Power, money, and anything else they can take for themselves.
