The Patriots placed WR Donté Stallworth on injured reserve and released TE Visanthe Shiancoe, the team announced Tuesday.
Stallworth re-signed with New England on Dec. 4 and had a 63-yard touchdown catch in the win over the Texans and played in 20 offensive snaps. A ninth-year veteran, Stallworth had 22 catches for 309 yards for the Redskins last season.
According to PFW correspondent Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Stallworth apparently had an ankle injury.
Shiancoe opened the season on the short-term injured-reserve list. He played in four games this season and did not record a catch. In Monday night’s loss, Shiancoe played in 11 snaps.
The way we see it
The Patriots reportedly placed a claim on former Bengals WR Armon Binns on Monday, but lost him to the Dolphins, and with Stallworth surprisingly going on I.R., receiver clearly still remains a priority. With two empty roster spots, expect a move this week.
As for Shiancoe, it appears the Patriots are comfortable moving forward with Michael Hoomanawanui and Daniel Fells as the backup and blocking tight ends.
