Patton Oswalt Trolls His Own Twitter Feed, Is Awesome

If you haven’t jumped on the Patton Oswalt bandwagon yet, now might be the time. This weekend, the outspoken comedian sent out a series of two-part tweets that, taken out of context, could be construed as hate speech. It was an absurd exercise, one that simultaneously entertained and called attention to the backwards thinking that still permeates our culture.

The magic began on Sunday, when Oswalt took to Twitter to share his insights on laundry and rap (racism), billionaires and wars (homelessness), gun control (NAMBLA), science (AIDS and homophobia), and more.

And while Oswalt’s experiement was a fascinating study of social discussion that embraced a stinging hilarity, equally as amusing were the responses of his detractors—some of whom were clearly unaware of the ultimate message Oswalt was sharing. One of the best replies?

But those who fell for the bit were far outnumbered by those who got the joke. Perhaps the most awesome endorsement came from the Nerd God himself, Joss Whedon, who tweeted:

Oftentimes we decry stars for not using their celebrity to help make change in the world—or instead, using that change in self-serving ways. Oswalt is proving once again that it doesn’t take much to make a difference.

Well played, Mr. Oswalt. If you’re taking requests, will you please write a follow-up to Zombie Spaceship Wasteland?
