Paul says 2nd place in NH shows strong support

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Ron Paul scored a solid second place finish in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday, positioning him as the leading anti-establishment alternative to Mitt Romney and ensuring a platform for the Texas congressman's libertarian message for weeks to come.

Paul won about 24 percent of the state's primary vote. It was an improvement from his showing in Iowa, where he placed third behind Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Inside a Manchester banquet hall, Paul told a cheering crowd the results repudiated critics who've warned that his views — particularly his anti-interventionist approach to foreign policy — were dangerous.

"They are telling the truth. Because we are dangerous — to the status quo," Paul said to loud cheers.

His New Hampshire showing represented a dramatic shift in fortune for Paul, a largely ignored also-ran in the 2008 Republican contest who placed a distant fifth in New Hampshire that year. This time, Paul's pledge to adhere to the Constitution, audit the Federal Reserve and reduce the size of the federal government found an audience among voters angry over government spending and bailouts and disillusioned with both parties in Washington.

While far behind Romney in New Hampshire, Paul was comfortably outpacing his other GOP rivals in the state.

The 76-year-old Texan ran strongest among young voters, according to exit polls conducted for the AP and the television networks. Paul carried nearly half of voters under age 30. About 4 in 10 new voters backed Paul, though first-timers made up just 1 in 8 voters in the state.

Paul ran even with Romney among voters with household incomes below $50,000, and among those who cited the deficit as their top issue.

Paul garnered about 4 in 10 votes among those who said it was most important that their candidate be a true conservative or have strong moral character. He ran even with Romney among those who said a candidate's issue positions were more important than their leadership skills or personal qualities.

Still, a majority of New Hampshire voters said they ultimately would be dissatisfied if Paul became the nominee.

Paul told supporters he had called Romney to congratulate him on his strong showing.

"He certainly had a clear-cut victory But we are nibbling at his heels," Paul said, declaring a win for "the cause of liberty."

Paul planned to fly to South Carolina on Wednesday for a noon rally in Columbia. The state holds its primary Jan. 21.

Yea, we just need to slightly dilute Obama, end up with Romney, and will be fine. Whereas the Constitution is the answer to this countries ailments, Ron Paul is the ideal candidate.

They say, 'birds of a feather, flock together'. If you read the comments from the Ron Paul followers in comparison to the others ( with a few exceptions ), you can just decide for yourself, the kind of decency, maturity, truthfulness, openness, self respect, esteem that Ron Paul's America would bring in. These qualities will rub in to the rest of the Americans.

Santorum gets second in Iowa and it's huge news (zomg!) Ron Paul gets second in NH and he gets 3 short paragraphs.

That's exactly what I thought. Never have a seen such short article on any other republican candidate. They felt they had to give RP a little something because their past attempts to ignore him were so blatant.

The media -- whoops, I meant corporate backers -- must really hate this. More and more they can't ignore Ron Paul, and oh have they tried. The more people learn about Ron Paul the better his chances of winning the nomination.

So now it's "the founding fathers would think Ron Paul is a kook". Guess what kids. The founding fathers were considered kooks by everyone for thinking they could take on "The King and Crown". Looks like RP is in sound company to me. Ke

      RON PAUL 2012
    • Conner F  •  Des Moines, Iowa  •  4 mths ago
I'm a high school student in West Des Moines, Iowa. We held a "mock caucus" at our school, with Bachman, Santorum, Paul, and Romeny's sons present. Out of all the candidates present, Ron Paul was the only one whom the 2,000 students supported. Bachman talked about IPhones, no one knew Santorum, and Romeny's sons talked about how thier dad made them build a fence. Only Ron Paul talked about relevant information, including education reforms, smaller government, and less foreign intervention. When he left, the entire student body started a chant. Sure, Iowa has some highly unintelligent people, but there is no imaginable way that Paul lost in the manner that he did. I'm only eighteen, but I already experienced how twisted these elections are.

I've always voted Dem, but this year I can't WAIT to vote for Ron Paul, and I don't care WHAT party he runs under! We have some of the biggest problems our country has ever faced. Obviously something needs to change. Ron Paul is like a breath of fresh air. You'd have to be crazy not to vote for him. I sure hope these votings aren't rigged, it does seem like an awful lot of RP supporters online but no landslide yet. I have faith he can do it though. I'm just bummed I can't help out in the Republican nom, as Im a registered Dem. How long does it take to get re-registered anyway?? lol and when's he coming to my state??

Can someone tell me exactly (not he threatens the bankers etc) why the media is so determined to exclude this Ron Paul guy from Any serious positive coverage? I never heard of the man, but my interest is suddenly aroused.
    • Brad  •  Lubbock, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Maybe after he wins in South Carolina they will let Ron Paul speak in a debate. It sure would be nice if the American people had a chance to hear Ron Paul speak before he gets the nomination.
    • Alex C  •  Baltimore, Maryland  •  4 mths ago
I remember hearing some pundit say something like"Ron Paul may know how to win straw polls, but he will never be able to beat a top tier candidate like Rick Perry in a primary election" . All I can say is watch the f out!! Ron Paul 2012!!
