Paul Says He Favors an Immigration Policy That Doesn‘t Rely on ’Barbed-Wire Fences and Guns’

Republican presidential candidate, Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas speaks to members of the group Hispanics in Politics, …

(The Blaze/AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul outlined his views on immigration Wednesday, saying he favors a compassionate policy that doesn't rely on "barbed-wire fences and guns on our border."

Paul spoke to several dozen people organized by Hispanics in Politics, Nevada's oldest Hispanic community group. The Texas congressman has scheduled several days of campaigning in Nevada before the state's caucuses Saturday.

Paul went into much greater detail on immigration policy than he has at most of his campaign stops. He typically steers clear of discussing rights for specific groups of people, insisting that his libertarian-leaning views apply to everyone as individuals.

But in Nevada, which is 26 percent Hispanic, Paul outlined an immigration policy far outside the Republican mainstream.

Paul blasted politicians who blame immigrants for causing the country's economic problems. He compared the situation to Nazi Germany's targeting of Jews in the 1930s.

"When things go badly, individuals look for scapegoats," Paul said. "Hispanics, the immigrants who have come in, are being used as scapegoats."

Paul said he doesn't support illegal immigration and said people who break the law should be punished. But he said he opposes any effort to round people up and ship them away.

"If an individual is found to be breaking the law, serious consideration should be given for them to return. But I would think 99 percent of people who come here come because they believe in the American dream," Paul said to applause.

Paul decried a punitive border policy, which said offended his belief in individual liberty.

"The one thing I have resisted and condemned: I do not believe that barbed-wire fences and guns on our border will solve any of our problems," he said.

Paul also said he was against laws that require immigrants to carry proof of legal status. He says he doesn't want to live in a country where people are required to carry identity papers.

"You say, `Well, this is only for illegals.' That's a bunch of baloney," Paul said. "How do you sort out illegals from legals? Unless you put papers and identification on everybody."

Hispanics in Nevada have favored Democrats over Republicans in recent election years - a full 74 percent of Hispanics supported President Barack Obama in 2008 over GOP rival John McCain.

But Fernando Cortes, Paul's director of Hispanic outreach in Nevada, said many Hispanic voters had shown interest in Paul's message.

"They're always pandered to by the left and ignored by the right," Cortes said of Hispanic voters. "They're very motivated by the wanting of freedom back and a sound economy."

Rep. Paul's remarks to supporters in Nevada Tuesday night:

All our problems are the illegal immigrants faults. We should make them wear gold stars or something so we can recognize them. Better yet, just make people of Latino decent that are here legally, even if they're Americans, wear them so they don't get hassled. Sounds like a good idea. Someone should Google that and see of if it's ever been implemented before and see how that worked out.
      • JohnC 3 mths ago
You know what that's a good idea.

That is good news then to the heavily armed human smugglers COYOTES and the cartel.

How can he compare the immigration of "illegals" here to the jews in Germany? Were the jews there illegally as these people are here? NO! Why do these candidates pander subdivisions over legal Americans? Is the vote that important to them that they would break the laws they are suppose to be condoning to uphold? I bet Ron Paul has windows doors and locks on his home, so would he feel secure for him and his family living without a secured house? Would he not won't to protect what is rightfully his? As long as we have politicians and presidents that pander and fail to secure our borders then we are placing ourselves in a Russian roulette situation awaiting death and disaster for our citizens

while personally i know paul is the best option for us in the USA

this is just one more area where i disagree with him and realize even he isnt perfect

while im not racist against all hispanics, i do realize that we have a serious illegal problem

i see it in western ny, i saw it in southern california, i hear about it from the rest of the nation

YES, we do have many other factors as to why our nation is having problems, to say that illegals are not part of that problem is really to just ignore one of the many giant pink elephants in the room

He means not individually , but he does want to take away the incentives that keep them trying to sneak in such as free collage and free health care ect .
      • guitar freak 3 mths ago
@johnwilkesbooth and that really is the answer my freind, stop the handouts to people that are not legally part of the system and then there is no reason to come or even stay once your here.stop the handouts and i would be willing to bet that majority of them would go home.

Yawn, if our politicians were serious about stopping illegal immigration they would fine the businesses that hire said immigrant. Slap a few businesses with massive fines, throw it in the news, and BOOM businesses stop hiring, people stop immigrating.

Not saying that is what they should do, just saying if they really want to stop immigration they need to kill the demand for their cheap labor.
      • Jay 3 mths ago
really fines and punishment? see how long that last, always loop holes brother. how about stop the incentive for illegals.......no free health care, government help, and also just cause you have kid here doesnt make you a citizen.
      • Donato 3 mths ago
@Jay. In order for someone born here to not automatically be a citizen we would have to change our Constitution. That would take 2/3 approval from congress and 3/4 approval from all the states legislatures. It's not that I disagree with you but that would be difficult to do. I think Jay has the right approach. Get rid of the demand for cheap labor by business through fines and serious punishment.

Get rid of the Welcome package required by the Obama administration(TANF,Medicaid etc) and have States institute a flat tax on goods and services. That should do it. ( Right now Illegals pay no income tax,get TANF,food stamps,Medicaid, subsidized education, etc) Geez I wish I could be illegal sounds like a pretty good deal.)

It's only when the economy is terrible that people get mad at illegal immigration. This did NOT start because of illegal immigration. Our economy is failing because the federal government is too large. Crony capitalism is destroying our economy. All of this is facilitated by the federal reserve. Unless we change things, illegal immigrants soon won't even come here...then we won't have them to be our scapegoat anymore. Problem solved!
      • Bob 3 mths ago
how soon til they stop sneaking in.....i really wanna know

when people think our government has the answers to all our problems-we are doomed--they are the cause of all our problems--let each state protect itself from illegal immigration as arizona is doing
    • Larry  •  Princeton, Missouri  •  3 mths ago
if they dont have welfare checks coming in --free medical and a host of other freebies--they have nothing to gain coming here--didnt i just read an article on here that this i currently working and they want the state of missouri to back this program(the people of the state)i am not against immigration but i am against illegals in our country

"It's a mistake to think that poor people get the benefit from the welfare system. It's a total fraud. Most welfare go to the rich of this country: the military-industrial complex, the bankers, the foreign dictators, it's totally out of control. [...] This idea that the government has services or goods that they can pass on is a complete farce. Governments have nothing. They can't create anything, they never have. All they can do is steal from one group and give it to another at the destruction of the principles of freedom, and we ought to challenge that concept."

Just get rid of the free ride that ILLEGALS get AND punish the businesses that hire ILLEGALS .we have a egg plant that used to operate here and thats what they did hire illegals, immagration would come in and clean them out,a month later the egg plant would just hire them back.this went on for about 5 years until the plant went out of business.some of the ILLEGALS left town, some just found work at another factory making stone countertops,i tried to put an app in to work there and it was so bad when i went in. The HR manager spoke spanish so she could talk to the employees.I saw this first hand becouse she walked into the brake room which was full of mexicans and only 1 white guy,the first thing out of her mouth was not good afternoon, but buinos nouches or how ever you spell it.Needless to say i didnt get a job even though i have 20 plus years experience in factory work. The following week more ads were placed in the paper that they were looking for help.I have talked to others that do work there ,and was told that even the supervisors had to learn spanish in order to run their departments. That is whats wrong with our economy, and the ILLEGAL allien problems

why do i have to press 1 for english,or cartons and containers have english on one side and spanish on the other. Why do signs have english and spanish on them,(i.e.) caution wet floors, enter, mensroom,.becouse we have too many ILLEGALS in this country, and if we dont cater to them they can sue.Im sorry buddy your ILLEGAL your not suppose to be here in the first place.but its not fair to them some say.I say to them shut up your the reason we have this problem.you dont see korien,or japeneese,Iranian,Indian,German and so on being treated this way.why is it the mexicans are so special in the way we treat them.its becouse 90% of the nationalities come in this country LEGALLY ,thier countries insist on it.Maybe we should sanction mexico and the american businesses that operate companys there till they start doing something about it and stop leaving it to us to take care of.im so sick of the bleeding hearts, and thier boo hoo human rights ,that jump on every bandwagon they can . So that now its to the point someone has more rights in MY country than i do.everyone is afraid that they will get sued becouse our justice system has allowed stupid assinign cases to get through. If i went to their country i wouldnt be treated so nicely if entered ILLEGALLY i would be punished and harshly and immediatly.I do believe people from other countries do have the right to live here and be given normal human rights if they enter my country LEGALLY

If Americans would quit living off of welfare checks and go get a job there would not be any jobs for the illegals to have. What type of work are most of these illegals doing?? That's right, jobs that lazy welfare recipients don't want.

Don't allow the repubs or dems to fool you , both parties are "war" parties . The difference is the dems hide it better but instead preach socialism . Most of our wars had dems in office while we spent huge piles of money and killed many . The bankers love war which makes them huge money and are always trying to "stir the pot" for war . Only Ron Paul will stop this mess and save us from this evil .

Whens some body going to stand up and say that "America is not for everybody" !!!!! The American dream right now is over 60% of the people living under the poverty level. And jobs flipping burgers is the norm. People are immigrating and bringing what their running from with them !!!!
    • MADASHELL  •  3 mths ago
Ron Paul will not build a fence to keep Americans in but he will stop ALL services to illegals and end all incentives for them to come here. He will support work visas when the economy is right.

This is the wisest of all the candidates, and the mass media is trying everything they can to make sure the people know he is unelectable. Let me say this, if he is there the day I pull the lever, he wins. He is the only one that can pull the independent and some democratic votes over. The rest of the guys are just a vote for Obama.
    • Caellyn  •  3 mths ago
I agree with Ron Paul. We blame illegals, but who is hiring them? We say they suck our social services dry, but who is hiring illegals at wages in which they need to be on social services? The root of the problem in our country is jobs at liveable wages. Do we change social services? or do we blame illegals and legals for being in jobs that don't pay?

Do we address the root problems? or find scape goats to villianize?

He's right. People should not enter illegally. But, we hire them. We send a confusing message.

Resolution: Keep hard workers and make them productive Americans and deport all these welfare deadbeats. That alone would make America a much better country.
