Paul says GOP result 'opens up the door'

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (AP) — Republican Ron Paul said front-runner Mitt Romney's inability to brush back challenges in votes Tuesday "opens up the door" to him and others looking to deny the former Massachusetts governor the party's presidential nomination.

The Texas congressman was headed for a solid second-place in Minnesota's caucuses, which were won by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Santorum also won Missouri and was in the hunt for a victory in Colorado's caucuses.

"I'm a little surprised. I thought Romney would have some of this automatic carryover," Paul told The Associated. "It certainly doesn't hurt us."

Paul was on course to capture more than a quarter of Minnesota's vote. He was a distant third in Missouri's non-binding primary and far back in Colorado.

Paul said of the night's results, "I think it splits the vote and sort of opens up the door to us."

Romney won Minnesota convincingly in his 2008 bid for the GOP nomination. He didn't put much personal effort into the state this time, but he visited once and loaded up on campaign mailings to GOP activists. .

In Paul's case, he invested plenty of time and money in Minnesota as he searched for the first win of his campaign. He said he's happy with the results and will shift his sights to Maine, where caucus results are due Saturday.

In a brief appearance at Coon Rapids Middle School, Paul waded through a crowd to sign autographs, pose for photos and remind people to vote. He declined to make any predictions on the Minnesota outcome before heading to another suburban Minneapolis caucus site.

Paul said his candidacy was perfectly built for Minnesota. "They love liberty, they don't like wars and they certainly don't like the Federal Reserve," he said.

One caucus-goer in Coon Rapids, truck driver Rod Garberson, said if Paul isn't the fall nominee the Republican Party won't get his vote.

"I gotta tell ya, this time I'm pretty well stuck on not supporting the party even if it means eight years of Obama and we all stand in bread lines for five hours for a sack of potatoes," Garberson said.

Paul finished fourth in Minnesota four years ago with 16 percent.

If Ron Paul does not get the republican nomination I (and many others like me) will not vote Republican. So far, all I've seen is a bunch of GOP politicians that try to tell you what they THINK you want to hear and they are even wrong about that. Ron Paul is the only one who keeps telling us the same thing. The only one thing I hope he changes is his stand about foreign policy. We can never go back to becoming Isolationist and hope to be a world power.

      DOWN WITH BIG GOVERNMENT
      DOWN WITH THE FED
UP WITH TERM LIMITS FOR POLITICIANS
UP WITH A BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT
      UP WITH RON PAUL!

Duuude nations that stretch themselves too thinly across the world eventually collapse...read about the military industrial complex that eisenhower warned about that has completely gotten out of control at this point. We need to spend our resources on defending THIS nation.

Im with Matt. I am also in agreement with you too W, if Ron Paul doesn't get the bid, I'm not voting Republican this election. It's time to take a stand.

Sure, decentralize the government, there are so many historical examples of this being very successful. like, uh, er.....uh...well there is ...no..guess not...maybe...no....uh okay maybe a decentralized government isn't a good idea. And maybe you will explain to me why a "gold standard" is so important. Arbitrary is arbitrary, gold has no intrinsic value so why should it be the standard by which we judge our money. Oh and if you want to see hyper inflation move over to a gold standard, that's the reason we left it to begin with. There is a finite amount of gold, all of it mined in the entire world would be a cube 10 yards square. How much gold would a dollar be worth .00000000001 of a gram? You'd essentially make our economy a closed system with finite amount of capitol. Closed systems are notoriously hard to maintain, economic turmoil would increase due to market volatility. Pauls plans are non starters.

No one wants Santorium. I have doubts about his wins. He can't get anyone to attend his rallies. No one is hot for him. No one ever talks about their support for him nor donates money. This is fishy. Are they cheating and giving Ron Paul's votes to Santorium?
      • Charles 3 mths ago
Really? The GOP (the anti-voter fraud people) cheating?

If Paul loses you cannot take a hard look at him and reevaluate or open you mind to reality. It just must be a conspiracy of some sort in your minds. So sad, so scary.

just waiting to see when Ron Paul wins a state....
    • Pronet  •  3 mths ago
Time after time I read the comments and Ron Paul is overwhelmingly more favorable then the alternatives. The fact that Ron Paul is not winning just confirms that Ron Paul detractors do not research anyone on the Internet, are swayed by negative ads and have absolutely no clue what kind of mess we're really in.
Unfortunately stupidity is the majority rule.

Rant about his age, twist the facts about his foreign policy, call him a wacko, all of that does not change the fact that this man pridicted our current financial status 10 years ago. He predicted the debt and the never ending wars. Your rants do not change the fact that the national debt will turn the U.S. into another Greece if not seriously addressed. Candidates including Obama and Romney give lip service to curbing spenidng and yet their plans still at trillions to the debt over the next TEN years at an average rate of one trillion a year. EVERY economist, politician and even Presidents say the debt is a real threat, yet they do NOTHING about it. Ron Paul's plan is the answer. His plan ends the wars, stops the deficit, brings back the value of the dollar, addresses unemployment and illegal immigration. Dont just thumbs this down, reply with your candidates detailed PLAN on these issues. If your candidate doesnt have a plan, why do they have your vote? Without a plan to fix things, they are saying they just want the title of President. Ron Paul 2012. A vote for anyone else is just more of the same failed politics we have endured for decades.

oh yeah those "racist" papers he wrote, if you actually read the content in it's entirety it isn't racist at all, but the media purposely distorts it and they know the majority of the public are ignorant enough to believe it. Why do you allow the media to manage your perception of reality?

Mitt Romney is an opposition researchers wet dream. There is video of him LITERALLY on every side of every issue. Over the last 15 years, he has been pro-tax, anti-tax, pro-life, pro-choice, pro-gun, anti-gun, pro-war, anti-war, pro health care, anti-health care, pro-gay, anti-gay, all based on who he is asking to elect him. If there is a political position, Mitt has been on both sides of it.
