    PayPal will debut in brick-and-mortar shops

    Yesterday in an eBay earnings call, CEO John Donahoe said that PayPal will make its way in-store for the holiday shopping season. While details haven’t been released yet, it appears that the integration into brick-and-mortar retailers will include location-based deals, more flexible transactions, and improved inventory access.

    Earlier this month, PayPal introduced a pop-up shop in New York, self-titled PayPal’s Shopping Showcase. “Image a digital wallet that stores all of your gift cards, loyalty points, and offers, and then automatically applies the stored money and savings for you at the point of sale,” PayPal executive Carey Kolaja wrote on the company blog. “Imagine purchasing an oversized item from the aisle and having it shipped directly to your house in a matter of licks. At the Shopping Showcase, we’ll be showing merchants and select members of the media a complete set of solutions that do all of this—and so much more.”

    PayPal has already become a dominant force in online retail. The company’s revenue increased 32-percent this quarter yielding an impressive $1.1 billion. Mobile and e-commerce in general have been doing well for themselves recently, much in thanks to the mass adoption of smartphones and mobile applications. But merchants and consumers that have shied away from online shopping will now have a more tangible option with physical PayPal locations. If executed properly, this will give buyers the comfort and in-store interaction and the convenience of paying and shipping via the Internet.

    It could also offer merchants a way to transition to using PayPal for their own e-commerce needs, and boosting this segment of its customer base is especially important for PayPal profits.

    The timing is certainly right: NFC adoption has picked up some steam with the official Google Wallet announcement and appearance of capable in-store modules. Couple that with the fact that the holiday shopping season (which has been increasingly profitable for e-retailers and online shopping portals) is upon us, and the sky just might be the limit for PayPal.

      I no longer trust them. After having my account foroze for over a month with no justification. I will nolonger use them.

      I also didn't really get the point. Why have your "e-wallet" in your smart phone access your PayPal account, which accesses your debit/credit card to pay for the item. Why not cut out the middleman (who is already raking in $1.1 billion a year) and have your e-wallet access your debit/credit card directly?

      But, after reading more closely, they are saying that you can store gift cards, loyalty points, etc., into the e-wallet via your online PayPal account. PayPal also has the verification system, it stores your shipping information, etc. I suppose if merchants are willing to pay the 3% or whatever surcharge that PayPal charges them to accept PayPal transactions, and these are not passed on to the consumer, then sure, why not?

      Besides, I don't carry a cell phone, much less a smart phone. So, this wouldn't apply to me, anyway.

      Before you trust Paypal, (or as I call it Prey Pal) do some research on the policies and procedures that they have. They have a habit of freezing accounts that have money in them, and holding the money without interest for up to six months (as allowed in the terms of service small print)

      You would be better off trusting a politician that trusting preypal

      I've heard too many stories of PayPal freezing the account of anyone that gets too much money. The devs making the Xenonauts game had their account locked down by PayPal. And Diaspora had to look elsewhere after PayPal started #$%$ them around about the $45,000 in donations they had made. This is not a company anyone should put their trust in.
