PayPal rolls out fingerprint authentication
PayPal says it is now offering fingerprint authentication for Samsung Galaxy S5 users
NEW YORK (AP) -- EBay's
PayPal unit said Friday that consumers with Samsung Galaxy S5 phones can now use a fingerprint authentication version of its mobile app.
PayPal said Galaxy S5 owners will be able to use their fingerprints to log on to mobile sites, apps, and in stores that accept PayPal. It said customers who use the PayPal app will get $50 or more in offers at merchants that accept PayPal. The company said the fingerprint login is now available in 25 markets including the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Brazil, and Hong Kong.
EBay shares rose 18 cents to $54.26 in morning trading.
Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has been pushing eBay to spin off PayPal, a mobile payment business that is growing faster than the rest of the company. On Thursday Icahn agreed to back down from his campaign to shake up the company, withdrawing two nominees to the board of directors and dropping his Ebay proposal. In return eBay named an additional independent director to its board.
